*sifting through*

bottom line is this:

VPC/AFC combo -- not too hard to tune, fair amount of flexibility/tunability, works well, and is proven. GCC doesn't have the same flexibility as AFC, so don't bother with it.

AEM EMS -- more difficult to tune due to complexity, maximum flexibility/tunability, semi-proven.

I still think the VPC/AFC combo is the best bet for amateurs, while still having the potential for loads of speed if you are patient. The EMS is pretty involved.

Because the %#%@$#@^ DSMlink folks have shafted all us 1G owners by not releasing a version for the 1G. The bastards. How dare they. etc.

(Note for the humour impaired: you didn't get it.)

It might be interesting to see if the 2G ECU could run survivably in a 1G...

For those that are using the VPC/GCCorAFC combo, are you using the stock timing maps? If not, what are you using to adjust timing?

For my personal goals, a VPC/GCCorAFC combo with datalogger is plenty ... if I can find one cheap enough that is. The AEM system seems to do all of that for about the same amount of $$$!

What about the MAF translator/GM mas/Afc combo. What about things like the Tmo eprom?

VPC/GCC/SFC combo is a great setup capable of going hella fast and still being streetable. That paired with a chipped eprom ecu is a sure thing to go fast.
Standalones like AEM and Haltech are for super serious people and not much fun to tune with.

Good Luck!

If you are sticking to the stock ECU, the Emanage is the best bet. It is as close as you can get to a standlone without actually having one.

I use it on my car with pretty good success.

16x16 fuel & timing maps. Can add PW to the injectors directly, can scale the airflow, anti-stall (which I use and works VERY well!), sub-injector control (2 channel), Vtec trigger (which you can use to trigger other things like solenoids, etc), global injector correction (scales the airflow).

And anyone can tune it, you don't have to be an authorized dealer. Just buy the cable and the software, and you are set.

IMHO

Had an AFC/2g mas, had AFC/VPC/TMO, now have AEM. After 10 minutes, the AEM ran better than ever.

AEM is by far the best. If you can't figure it out, you probably are mentally retarded and need to be put out of your misery. If you can't understand some basic tuning concepts and read a instruction manual, then please don't modify or race a car. Start with Legos or something.

What about all the bugs though with the AEM? I know of a few that were pretty serious that the average person would have had problems finding. I'm not saying its a bad product, I just still think its the beta stage. I have a few friends using it, but they had some help from one of the best in the dsm world to help tune it.

I havent seen any bugs yet that didn't take 3 seconds to correct. Just read the forum, go in and correct any known issues, and start it up.

i think the emanage with the e-01 as the controller (instead of hauling a laptop around) would be a sweet setup. People claimed full adjustability with the extra software etc. my question: would you still need the extra stuff if you were using the e-01 as the controller instead of a laptop? my money's on the eman/e-01 for my needs but not so if i have to have a laptop to get the most out of the eman.... maybe a vendor or user can answer my question. Thanks, Jake

Why bother with the emanage? If you are a 2g get the DSMlink. If you are a 1g get the AEM. The AEM takes some tuning to get everything perfect, but isn't bad. None of the bugs have been super serious and they are basically all worked out now. The AEM will be out of beta within 2 weeks. Dre makes 448 whp on one, so it can't be that bad!

like i said, maybe some dont want to carry around a laptop. but i thought i read on their website that dsm link is available for a palm handhell now too. but i had the idea to put the e-01 in the place where the cd player was and put my head unit up in the center vent. i think thatd be kick ass but if i cant do that with success ill just go dsm link.
