1G Bent camshaft dowel

Discovered my cam gear dowels are bent when reassembling the head. Decided against using them since I had another set. These are OEM 1g cams. Nothing catastrophic happened when I last ran them. How would camshaft dowels get bent like this? If I want to salvage them, where can I buy new dowels?

If there is damage to the hole in the cam you run the risk of messing up the new dowel pin. If that pin goes it could cost you a topend. Stock cams are cheap just get another one.

My opinion, no big deal. How did it happen, hard to say. Whomever did it, did it with the utmost care obviously.

Most likely these are metric and alloy steel (not stainless). Any place that sell nuts, bolts, & screws will probable have them. Grab some Vise-grips & put them out, measure diameter and length and buy some new ones. Tap the new ones in and keep them straight while doing so.

I would not hesitate replacing the pins & reusing the cams as long as that's all that's wrong with them.

McMaster Carr has them. That is where I have bought them in the past for mechanical fuel pump drives.

Send me a PM with your address and I'll ship you a couple or three. Did this same thing last year and bought more than I'll ever need from McMaster-Carr. For those interested, they are 6mm diameter x 14mm long. These are the ones I bought and am currently using. I would recommend anyone with "bent" dowels to change them.

I'll have a look at the bore to make sure.

I already have a spare set of cams, so all good there. Would be nice to fix these.

For anyone stumbling onto this thread in the future, the OEM dowels are part no. MD158443 and are still readily available. The same part is used on both 1g and 2g DSMs.
