Ok. So I bought a 98 2nd gen Mitsubishi eclipse gst. When I bought the car it was at about 88k miles, The guy I bought it from said they had replaced the belt at 75k or maybe even 80k I don't remember. But around 89k miles yeah practically right after I got it shit started to hit the fan. I had to put a new starter and alternator in the car. And now when I start the car from it being cold it screams like a banshee like nothing I've ever heard. And after you get it running a while it goes away and becomes a slight chirp. I've figured out it's the accessory belt because it mainly comes back when I have my lights, ac, stereo ect. running. Included I have a picture of my belts. My dad was saying that the top belt support may be put on backwards? Because the belt looks angled when it shouldn't be? I really need help.

So I've been reading other people's forums like a good child, And I think my problem is probably the tension. How can you tell how tight the belt should be? Should I just take it to a mechanic and get them to do it or is it an easy fix?

hello yes they are probly to tight or to loose if it moves like 3/16 to 1/4 inch tighten it and if it feels like its stiff back off just a little until the broblem goes away:thumb:

Thanks for the advice, I did just that.(The problem has stopped for now) Waiting for a while to do a completely cold start so I can see if it is truly gone. I also found that part of timing belt cover was cracked in half. Just out of curiosity how many pieces is there suppose to be? I have the top cover over the bigger belts. Then I have two pieces that were supposed to be one that were split, And there is another piece below behind the other belts. is this one usually connected or not?

So how would you go about turning that around? Because I have a motor mount that goes over it like in the picture shown, So do I have to attempt to take that motor mount off? If so how do I keep the engine up? There isn't much physical engine showing under the car to jack it up.

No you don't have to remove the motor mount. Loosen and remove the 2 belts from the pulley. Then use a long 10mm wrench to loosen the pulley bolts (see pic). You can hold pulley in place by placing a narrow crow bar over and under the heads of 2 other bolts while loosening this bolt (or another 10mm wrench to hold another bolt). The pulley is made up of 2 halves which you need to put back together correctly (cup part of the inner pulley half fits into the cup part of the outer). If you wish you can leave the belts on until all the bolts are loose to help hold the pulley (it won't be enough to hold it from turning though). To make it easier to get at the bolts you can also place a jack with block of wood under the oil pan, disconnect the engine mount, and lift (or lower) engine enough to get at them.

I have a virgin turbo motor and the above pictures are the way mine look.

IMO the pulleys are A LOT easier to get to from below. I used a floor jack and picked up the whole drivers side of the car about 1ft, just enough to flop about underneath when I put on my new belts a month ago. If you have access to a lift it'd be even easier.

Yeah I just had to leave everything on, The only hard part was getting everything lined up. But new belt on sucessfully pulleys turned the right way. (My mothers brilliant mechanic is to thank for that!) It was a hassle but now I'm just waiting to do a cold start to see if it worked out. Thank you for all the help! :thumb:
