I have a high pitched squeeling from the engine bay on SOME cold starts..on occasion it lasts for 30 or so seconds, sometimes less then ten seconds.. I was going to replace the crankpulley/harmonic balancer, but I was reading about the possiblitly of the throw out bearing needing replaced, it does not squeel all the time.. sometimes days before it squeels again..

The squeeling is really loud, picture a chipmunk getting caught between a pulley and belt...

terrible, terrible sound.

appreciate all the help

how do you know proper tension

Tight but not stretching the belt. The belt should have almost no up and down movement if the pulleys are close together (2-3inches) If it's been doing this for a while, the belt could be getting hard, or "glazed" compounding the problem. The ribbed side of the belt should be soft enough to dig your fingernails into pretty easy. If there are ribs missing or more than 4-5 cracks per inch, then it's time for new belts.

If it's throwout bearing noise, it should change when the clutch pedal is pushed.

You could test the crank pulley with a paint/crayon mark across the rubber insulation. If the marks separate then it's bad.

Adjustment:

"To check the tension of the drivebelts, push firmly on the belt with your thumb at a distance half way between the pulleys and note how far the belt moves (deflect). As a rule of thumb, the belt should deflect 1/4-inch if the distance from pulley center to pulley center is between 7 and 11 inches; the belt should deflect 1/2-inch if the distance from pulley center to pulley center is between 12 and 16 inches."

Quoted from my Haynes manual. Worked like a charm on my car.

i posted a link lastnight, about some belt squeakign issues i have, the problem is on some cold starts the engine makes some extremely loud squeals, sometimes it wont do it for days and other times it does it pretty consistantly.

There are several chips in the crank pulley on the outter rim, should that be replaced immediately?

should i just check belt tension?

I need help on this..any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your crank pulley is or already has separated. The chips in the pulley would indicate that the half of the pulley that the belts ride on is walking out and hitting the bidy. My 2g did the same thing, would squeal like hell upon start up or at idle, revving it would sometimes make it go away. While you have the belts off though, be sure to check all of your accessories to make sure they spin freely and have no play, since your already at that stage.

Check for separation on the crank pulley, that would cause it to squeek. If that is not the cause you may try tightening the belts. I don't think the chips will cause it to squeek unless it is extremely bad. Mine has some chips in it with no problems...

I would start with checking the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and if equipped, your A/C pump. Once you have the belts off, inspect the grooves of each pulley (the surface on which the belt makes contact). Make sure its clean and undistorted. Next spin all the pulleys, they should move freely without much resistance or noise. Now try and wiggle each pulley side to side, to check for bearing play. All of that aside, I still have a hunch on your crank pulley. You can check this by removing the belts, and grabbing onto the crank pulley and giving it a wiggle, chances are the outer half will come right off as mine did. Let me know how you make out.
