BALANCE SHAFT sprocket removal tips?

Hey i have a 95 GST...and im replacing the oil pump, im down to ONE bolt...and its the balance shaft sprocket...yes ive had people tell me i should of left the belt on...but it broke along with the timing belt...ive tried shoving a piece of wood in there...or trying to get a screwdriver to stay in there...but nothing works...does any one have any tips or sugestions? I'd Apreciate any help.

Have you got the oil pan off and is the motor in the car?

If you have an impact gun w/ proper sized socket, it works very well. It spins for like 1/4 turn then just loosens the bolt.

yes the oil pan is off...and yes the motor is in the car...

I took a long extension and turn the crank over till it was up against the extension and turned the bolt off.

extension? what kind? and if i turn the crank the bance shaft sprocket wont do anything so i dont think that will work? if you could specify a little bit more maybe i could understand...(yes i know it sounds like im stupid...sorry)

If you have the pan off look at the shaft, it is flat on one side. Try to stick somthing(an extension mabey?) against the flat side to hold it in place. THat should work. Good luck.

inside the oil pan...right under the crank theres a plate...does it matter if i take that off?

Make the tool for holding it, like the VFAQ talked about...

I made my tool in less than an hour or so for less than $10.00 (for the piece of bar stock).
I made a pattern first on an index card and after I got the index card 'fitting' on the sprocket, I put the card where I wanted it on the bar stock and hit it with some red paint. Then I took the card off and everywhere that there was red paint was where it needed to be ground or drilled at. Much easier if you make a pattern on PAPER first as paper is easier to adjust and tweak then steel is. Once you get the index card fitting, You are set and ready to begin working the bar stock. Saves much time!

The only tools I needed to make this were my cheap ass bench grinder ($30.00), my electric drill and a 3/8 bit ($4.00 - I ruined the bit drilling the holes). The paint I had was leftover from another project... It is not hard to make this tool. The instructions given in the VFAQ are good enough for anyone to be able to follow easily. I did it.
