thinking about removing the balance shaft. what are some of the pros and cons?? thanx guys

first are you planning on doing this with the motor in the car. second dont fix whats not broken. I see this mod as a do when building the motor as it is such a PITA to do, with little improvement to operations. But , this is not to try and talk you out of it as that is my opinion and my opinion is only a suggestion. but to answer your question

pros
- higher oil pressure (depending on how you look at it could be a con)
- one less belt to wory about
- if balancce shaft belt breaks normally it takes out the timing belt this issue will no longer exist

cons
- extra engine vibrations felt in the cabin
- PITA to do
- higher oil pressure (depending on how you look at it could be a pro)

Are you asking about a 94 Dodge Stealth?

Commenters here are assuming a 4G63.

I made my own kit, and it was well worth it, it was hard even when the motor was out of the car so... i wouldn't recommend doing it in the car. And the cabin shaking isn't noticeable unless you have solid motor mounts or poly, which in that case you will expect A LOT of bone shaking.

no no no LOL a 95 gst. im getting ready to buy one tomorrow and im just curious about the pros and cons of it. :hmm:

thats what i keep reading is its very hard to do. i have access to lifts and everytool imaginable because my friend works at a mechanic shop and has been a mechanic for 20+ years. but even though everyone says its hard is it worth it?

I wish I would have did it to my dsm since that's what killed my tbelt. The balance shaft belt snapped and got lodged in one of the pullies and shredded the teeth off the tbelt. Atleast that's what it looked like to me. If I had all the tools and was able to take the motor out I would go for it.

It was very very worth it. Doing a oem rebuild at 18 years old and not having a dependable paying job, if that stupid belt broke, i would have no dd. So, in the end the shaking isn't bad at all, the balance shafts are gone and i did it for 99cents at o Reillys. IF YOUR going to pull the motor go ahead and do it. If your going to leave the motor in the car, and just switch timing and the balance belt. If you are going to pull the motor send me the nut with the oil port and ill weld it and mail it back for free.

A 1995 DSM is probably a high mileage car. The balance shafts should be either removed or the balance shaft bearings replaced.

The balance shaft bearings wear out faster than the main or rod bearings.
When the balance shaft bearings seize the balance shaft belt breaks.
When the balance shaft belt breaks it gets stuck in the timing belt.
With the timing belt jammed, it breaks.
When the timing belt breaks the valves and the pistons "interfere" with each other.

I would also recommend removing them. I have no BS and polys all around and it's not bad at all. On my old motor i had the balance shaft belt snap and luckily it took out the CAS so the motor shut off before my valves hit my pistons. But being stuck waiting for a tow truck for hours is WACK.

If one of your concerns is vibrations I would say don't worry about it its not really noticiable. I bought my car not knowing that It had the balance shaft mod done to it and I coudn't feel any vibration out of the orndinary. I Found out it had been done when we replaced the timing belt :D

the car only has 140k on it but i think its settled, im gunna go ahead and do it. it seems much more logical to do it then risk f***ing my whole motor up. thanks guys!
