I just pulled the motor out of a 91 gsx that i purchased. The guy who owned it before me claimed he just had a shop in town change both timing belts about 2k ago and now the engine is knocking. Well the balance shaft belt was broke and jammed up in the t-belt. The timing was off 2 teeth, it was not tensioned correctly and when i tore down the motor I found a mangled up balance shaft bearing inside the block. The bearing came out and the shaft wobbled around like none other, dug into the block and rounded out the hole where the bearing rides a good cm. That and that alone is the reason why I removed the balance shafts from the engine on my 90.
Other things I found:
Something got sucked into the turbo at one point in time. The turbine is chewed up like a bi***. Whatever got sucked in the turbo eventually made its way into the #1 combustion chamber where it dinged the #### out of the head. The mains are shot. Oh and the transfer case had NO fluid. Nice huh?
