Bad starter?

off to auto zone I go. If BOTH starters are good, counting my old one, can I just put it on a switch?
 
I would run a test switch for the little wire that tells the starter to engage, click it and see if it turns over. If it does then you know that the wire in quetion is not getting it's circuit completed when the key is being turned on. You could also check it first with a voltmeter to see if there's any change to the wires state when the key is turned to the "start" position. IIRC the wire should get +12v signal when the key is turned to "start" and should be dead (no ground continuity) when the key is in any other position.

I've been doing this little test to determine where to start tracing starter problems since i was in high school and it's always helped eliminate a lot of variables.
 
my buddies and I are thinkin...Is it possible I got a 1g or 95-96 torque converter or trans? some things when putting this trans in were a little different. I went under autozones website and the torque converter seems to fit 94-99's but one of my buddies says no way. anyway something I got doesnt fit like it should? idk
 
ok guys so I just jumped the starter and got it to spin BUT. yes, BUT its NOT engaging on the ring for the torque converter. Is there a difference in torque converters? and OR starters from 94-99? FML!:notgood:

going back through the post again i can say that the problem is going to be electrical and the torque converter can't play a part in the starter system not actuating. But either way just by this statement i quoted. if you did this yourself and it was done in any place other than a machine shop, you need to pull the trans back out and get the correct flexplate NOW! You're lucky the starter won't let you get the car going because once it starts and you attempt to drive it you'll be replacing another trans and the flex plate and torque converter. Because if that torque converter isn't dead on center and in balance like it should be it's going to tear everything round it to shreds really fast, this is not something that can be modified to work by ovaling a hole out with a drill, dremel or any other means thn on a properly jigged milling table or set up some way so that all changes to the holes are equal in direction and size..and either way it would still need the balance checked..You may get away with being lucky enough to drive it for a while if you don't want to pull the trans or think you did a suitable job, but over time it's going to tear it's self up again sooner than later.
 
ok guys I had a 1g starter laying around and compared it to a 2g one and the 1g starter came out more and works! Who'd a thought. She runs now, but I didnt ever figure out the starter problem, but I just wired it to a switch. Thanks for everyones help! :thumb:
