I am still getting some pretty bad gas mileage.

I am only getting about 19.7 mpg with mostly city driving shifting at 4k.
I have already replaced my front O2 sensor and am looking to replace the fuel filter.

I have a 99gst with about 55k miles on it. Should my fuel filter already be bad?

What else should I check or change? I have NKG plugs and Accel wires are on the way.

Thanks,
Nathan

For highway your looking at 25-30 mpg tops with all wheel drive and a turbo and city about 22 depending on how you drive it. Plus you also have to remember the dsms have fairly small tanks they hold about 10 gallons.

And one more thing no matter what you do always go with BP (amico) gas just do to the fact that they have the cleanest stuff and you know it wont be watered down in which 60 percent of other company’s do. Which kills your internal parts along with decrease in horsepower and it wont kill ya if you go with 89 octane with stock parts plus its usually 6 cents cheaper witch adds up over time.

wtf? you canadians dont have the premium fuel only sticker all over the place?

Most high performance cars ive had that needed premium would knock like a beotch if i didnt put at LEAST 91 in there. My Z, my Integra GSR included.

thats just not right. I would DEFINITELY stop putting the crap gas in man, if you want to have your car live longer.

I have a mildly modified tsi awd, and im getting 16-18 mpg city, and roughly 21 hwy. Thats with 550s, 255 fuel pump, and no FPR :D

But yeah...i always fill up with either bp/amoco or Mobil. They seem to give my car the best performance.

I dont care what other people say, i KNOW my car runs like arse when i put philips 66, speedway or some other crap in my car. Even the local Shell station sucks nuts.

Also, my tank is not 10 gallons. I wish it was. 10 gallons is like a honda tank. Whenever i fill up, i get around 13 gallons. I could go for 14.5 if i was feeling like a daredevil.

Premium in Chicago right now is ABOUT 1.69 a gallon. I spend roughly 22-23 dollars to fill up my tank.

Nothing went wrong, I'm sure that's what the previouse owner used too, and I'm sure most people who just use DSM's as a commuting vehicle who arnt enthusiests use 87. I know for a fact that my 1991 Talon doesn't say premium unleaded, maybe a sticker was taken off or something, what about the other 1G's on here? Do you have a premium unleaded sticker?

It may be a Canadian spec thing to not have the premium stickers.

I guarentee all A-spec cars have the premium note everywhere.

And im sure that MOST people who own turbocharged DSMs are in fact literate, and can read in their gas gauge and on the gas cap that they should only use premium.

dude
im pretty sure that if you put in 89 it will be ok especially when the 91 is 9 or 10 cents more. But you can do what you want. MY 95 runs great with 89 and had no problems and the reason they put premium on there is so that you see more of a hose power gain which im not disputing. But in the winter what’s the point? Ya 91 CLEANER BUT IT WONT KILL YOUR ENGINE IF YOU PUT 89 IN.

$20 a week=too much for college student!
You should probably fill out your profile so we know what you're driving, but figure around 20mpg with a turbo, and 25 without.

Another important thing to note is that FWD turbo DSMs get better gas mileage. I'm not sure exactly how much, but they weigh about 250lbs less than the AWD variants. Also, AWD drivetrains are less efficient because of the need to transfer power to all 4 wheels; this also decreases gas mileage slightly.

I get about 20MPG in a mix of city (Worst traffic in the country) and highway driving. Sometimes highway driving consists of stop and go traffic too. I accelerate like a normal person most of the time, but I have more of a lead foot than the average person. I am also significantly modded. My larger fuel pump definitely decreased my gas mileage a tiny bit. Take my results for what they are worth.

:laser: 92 awd, pretty much stock with an mbc and boost gauge.

I get about 160 miles in mixed highway/street traffic with 11 gal of premium.
14.5mpg city
I have a heavy foot...

but for strictly highway i get about 260 miles on 10.5 gals of premium traveling about 85+ mph
24.5mpg highway

But that's a 12 year old motor with 83k miles on it.

also if you pick up a stock non modded older model dsm remeber that hoses, seals and gaskets are going to go, and any part that is original. So don't forget to figure that in.

you should probably get thicker glasses bc my info is right there in the profile? i really dont know what kind of gas mileage i get. city is like 15 i believe dont know highway. how many miles can i get with $10? i never reall fill up my tank unless i go somewhere far so if i can roll with $10-15 a week i'll be happy

best I use to get was 24mpg(95gsx). Since I switched to the 16g and 550's Im getting only about 20mpg. This is being driven pretty hard.

I just thought I might draw attention to the fact that increased insurance costs are most likely going to dwarf the amount of money you save in gas...

i can say that, i moved from jersey shore pa to williamsport and my insurance went up $45. Now with my awd eagle, i get about 280 to the tank, and thats running around from Lock haven to mony and around williamsport. and yet my CEL is still on..... so i dont know what that would do once it is off/fixed, and i use 93 premium as the little sticker says...

I have never gotten less than 20mpg aroung town (w\heavy foot all the time) and got my best highway over thanksgiving with 29mpg @ 75mph averaged 27-28 @75+ According to manual it's suppose to have a 16-17gl tank, I've never put over 12 in mine yet and never run anything other than BP ultimate. This is all in a '97 turbo awd w/mods, check my sig.

Here's an update on my money wasting TSI awd.

I changed the spark plugs and wires because they were looking pretty bad. The air filter got changed as well. The old one was clogged like a mofo. I decided not to get the o2 sensors yet because I had get an emissions test. I figured it would help me determine if the o2 sensors are a probably cause, but I passed the emissions test.

BUT... my fuel economy still sucks. I'm still pretty much getting the same. I think it might have improved just a little bit with the new air filter, but basically I think I'm getting around 11 - 13 mpg.

is there anyone out there having gas mileage problems on their TSI awd? If it's not the o2 sensor, then what is it?

is it possible that you can pass emissions and still have a bad o2 sensor?

I think the place that tested my car for emissions didn't give a damn and passed me anyway. I don't know. I need help!

x628x:

So you replaced the o2 sensors already and it didn't help? Well that really sucks. I have a 2g and it has o2 sensors which is gonna cost me a lot! I don't want to replace it if I don't need to.

hmmm....i get about 27 mpg if i drive easily and the least i get is around 21 mpg if i choose to go racing or drive hard.

this is how i measure my MPG
1. Go refill my gas tank all the way.
2. Reset my mileage counter.
3. When the gas gauge is close to E, go refill gas all til full.
4. Write down the amount of gallons it took to fill up the gas tank.
5. Write down the mileage you have currently on your mileage counter.
6. Divide the mileage by the number of gallons it took to fill up ur tank and the result would be the MPG your car is getting.
