My alternator has been going out. I am sick of the squeaking it never goes away now. I have a volt meter and know it is not doing its job. What are some strong reliable aftermarket upgrades or replacements?
[I have a 6 bolt]

No, the alternators are 65/75 amps US and 90 amps Canada for day time running lights.

If you want a better alternator look up the Saturn alternator mod. It requires you to lose your AC compressor BUT it's the only real choice for a good high amp alternator for our cars (As far as I know, and I've checked around).

Galant Vr4's DO come in 90 amps stock from the factory. Good upgrade for you DSMr's. I have seen people do the Saturn upgrade, but im sure there are vendors that have a different internal stock setup somewhere.

High output upgrade? 130mm GM alternator (Saturn)

Simple and affordable solution? Replace it with a known working used one for about $50.

I assume you are referring to this -> http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-electrical-wiring/272646-saturn-alternator-swap.html

What if the engine is still in the car? I imagine it's doable but more tricky to get in there with a grinder...

What about this thread by Glenn? http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/custom-fabrication/344794-important-improvements-saturn-alternator-swap.html .. just reading it now (well, not ALL of it)

I did the saturn alternator swap in my 1990 talon a few years ago, I have had no problems with it and am happy with the mod.

I didn't have to lose my ac compressor, but maybe it's different for 2gs. I also did the mod with the engine in the car and just using a dremel. It wasn't difficult.

Also, you can purchase modified saturn alternators on ebay, I bought a 200 amp alt. there. It comes in handy if you have a high powered aftermarket sound setup.

If you do the swap make sure you follow the improvements on saturn alt. swap, linked above, for the wiring. I originally wired my saturn alt. according to the original write-up and I kept getting a parasitic battery drain which would kill the battery overnight. After doing the wiring according to Glen, I have had no problems.

Theres a company called alterstart that make more powerful units for alot less then oem. I looked at the 150 amp unit but i didnt get it as there customer service wasnt all that smart, i must have got a trainee or something!

Does anyone know the part number of the galant vr4 alternator? Thanks

Thanks alot guys, and on another note, do you think rebuilding one is a good idea? Let me know thanks
Not a bad idea at all as long as you know where to get the parts and as long as you know what you're doing.

Yup, that's it. I just scored a 140-amp Powermaster in a 130mm GM case. Looking forward to running it this coming summer.

I bought one of those extra wound alternaters from Alterstart back in 2001 for my '95 GS. It handled my stereo perfectly and I never had any issues with it. Though I still believe the Saturn alternater is the better route these days.

I run the 7th generation galant 90 amp alternators. They are a direct fit. They keep keep up with the electronics at lower rpm way better than the stock eclipse alternator.

Gvr4 is a 6th gen, 7th gens I don't think came with a 4g63t

I am not talking about a galant vr4, i am talking about the 7th gen galant with the 4g64. There are millions of them out there. The original poster has a 2g which has a 4 pin alternator plug, the 1g and galant vr4 have a 2 pin alternator plug, they won't plug and play on a 2g, the 7th gen galant alternator however will.
