Heyy guys i went out to start my girls 96 eclipse gs and it would start but die soon after i had to fight to get it to stay running and it seem to of have been back firing out of the intake. I do believe that means the timming is off but before i get into that i wanted to make sure with the experts at DSMtuner :) thanks for any help guys! and the car has been sitting for the past few days idk if that would add to the problems with it being cold out or not? thanks again guys!

Check to see if there is exhaust coming out of the tailpipe and if it increases as you push the gas. May have a clogged cat or something.

Yeah try what rlacasse1 said or even just disconnect the exhaust infront of the cat and if it still give you issues id spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold make sure its not leaking if neither of those turn up any inprovement or change id say its safe to say the timing is off or possibly the cam sensor is goofed up.

there was exhaust coming from the tailpipe but there was also a funky smell if that helps at all?

Define funky smell

hmmm i guess its more like a sweet smell? i took the headers off tonight and i could smell it from inside the headers alone. "ive decied to just pull the motor and tranny and work on doing a rebuild."

double check the firing order. i know mine backfired like crazy when i accidentally swapped 2 wires

Check your timing when my car jumped a tooth I had the same symptoms. The coolant smell would also lead me to believe your head gasket might have failed. Let the car run for a few minutes then let it cool down then check your coolant level if it went down indicating your burning it.
