awd transfer case spline?

I have a 97 awd trans and found that the spline that goes to the transfer case moves in and out about a 1/8in (give or take). Is that normal or is there something that I should check for?

Im not sure how much is too much but there is a little in and out play, all that holds that shaft in the trans is a little steel ball.

Once the transfer case is installed, that will not move at all, so it should be OK since the transfer case will hold the shaft in place. Question is, does the tranny leak from that shaft?
