Im buying a 1991 Tsi AWD but it has a welded center diff. Is it possible for me to break the weld and have it return to the way it is? Im very confused and i dont really want a 50/50 split while daily driving to and from school, i heard it was better at the track but 50/50 sucks on the road..
:talon:

Your car is ALWAYS in a 50/50 split. The welded diff, correct me if i'm wrong, pertains to the differential inside your transmission(obviously).
What happens when theirs an open diff is when your right tire slips, power is transfered to THAT tire.
When its welded. Power is transfered to BOTH tires no matter which one's slipping. I believe that corrects the one eyed burnouts...
You could probably break the diff...but I'd just leave it. You'll hafta pay someone to crack the tranny open and break it free. You might as well just buy a new tranny and sell that one... Or since a welded diff is wanted by a few people, offer them a swap...

No. the weld has destroyed metal.
Im very confused
Yes, you are. Search "torque split".

As you said, you're very confused.

This is my first post. I am in "search", and came across this thread. I have an "89 Colt that got the front frame "crumpled". My motto is don't repair it; rebuild it better. So, I have taken another Colt shell and started moving my stuff into the "new" shell. In so doing, I am converting to an AWD. I just purchased the last element of a race built AWD tranny and transfer case. It is supposed to have a welded center diff. I use this car on the street and AUTOCROSS. Will the welded center diff work well in autocross? I have a Quaife LSD on my old tranny. Is there any application for this on my AWD setup? Would it be desireable to use the Quaife instead of the weld? Advice appreciated.

You should really open up you're own thread when asking a question that's not really relevant to the original topic.

Thanks for the advise, really. I also received a PM to the same extent. I appologize. I am just all over the place looking for answers (advice). I even forgot where I was. This is the Newbie section, which is why my post was accepted. When I went to start a thread, I went to the "regular" forum. My bad. In some defense, some places want the writer to have investigated existing threads before opening another that is thought to be "related'.
Oh, does this count as my 2nd of 100 posts? How about replies to PM's?
