AWD supposed to make some noise?

When the clutch is engaged in gear I can hear the faint sound of what sounds like the noise you would hear if your brakes were grinding (subtle low pitch rubbing) But it only happens with the clutch engaged in gear, if I am rolling at say 50kmh and take my foot off the clutch the noise goes away which I am assuming is something to do with the AWD system.

It doesn't sound rough or anything or overly loud, just noticable.

Like i said before if youve ever taken brake pads down to steel beyond the squeeler it sounds like that but much less loud and much less grindy.

My car makes a pretty loud gear mesh noise on decel, usually in the 3000-4000 RPM range. I've never been able to figure out what the cause is. But I know a few other wisemen here who experienced the exact same noise and they haven't been able to find an explanation either.

My car makes the same sound, but I personally hear it from the back and it does it into a lower range to just as high as your sound. It is my rear diff. and I have found play in it.

Mine sounds like it's coming from something up front, but I may be wrong. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was coming from the rearend, as that is the only thing I've never torn into. daren_p had the same issue, and his car has brand new everything. He even has a fresh shimmed rear end and the noise is still there...

My drivetrain is noisy as hell. I have gear lash noise due to the trans being shimmed improperly (barely) during a rebuild, and I have a nasty rattle in neutral with the clutch out that I think is input shaft bearings. (The TOB is OEM and has been replaced twice).

I also have a low freq grind in the front at very low speeds/cornering that feels something like a brake pad grabbing, but everything from the tranny axle holes outward is new (seals, axles, rotors, calipers, pads, wheel bearings, lines, nut, etc.). So it's either my worn tires (cupped from auto-xing), the tranny innards, or possibly clutch disk springs hitting the PP every now and then.

I'm just gonna drive the piss out of it until it breaks or I get motivated enough to drop the tranny and open it up. :thumb:

When I talked to Lucas English about it he said that it is because of the rear end.

My car makes an ungodly grinding sound on deceleration that almost sounds like a train chugging down some tracks.

Yea the car otherwise runs fine. Its completely stock at the moment but who knows when the previous owner changed tranny/diff/xcase fluid. It doesn't seem to have any specifically bad sound to it just a noticable hum/grind.

So its normal until otherwise indicated by blowing up?

Yes. That is the usual DSM warning system. It applies to most any area of the car. :D

Isn't that the truth I worry when I don't hear noises come from every where...That's when you know somethings going to breaKROFL

I had that noise on my first tsi awd. With my clutch pushed in, it would grind a little. It was my clutch fork shimmed too much throwing moving parts into my bellhousing, it was the smallest little grind spot inside, but made a lot of noise.

Yours has to be something like that, Your saying that if you're just cruising at 50km/h in 3rd, and you push in the clutch, you'll hear grinding noises....But when you let the clutch back out, it will not make noise. Its something with your clutch. Probably a worn Throwout bearing or the rubbing that I had.

and for the rest of the people with noises, try shockproof redline.

It makes the noise when the cluth is engaged i.e the car is in gear and moving, it stops when I push the clutch in.

Some of the noise is due to the driveshaft and its weak mounting brackets. Put in some aluminum bushings and it will help quiet some of it down.

It will also be worse if you have a lightened flywheel as it cannot absorb the vibration as much as the oem one.

I have had my Talon for 9 years and the gear backlash noise is loud and always has been. I do set up diffs for hot rods. I have never opened the talons up but I recognize the noise. The non coast-power side of the R&P is the important pattern. No worries/noise on mine under power. Tres...
