Yep, I noticed that myself but thought nothing of it. The h.p. a built tranny must be sucking up would be interesting. I read an article in Racecar engineering that talked about the power gains just from going to a dogbox justifying the cost and increased noise levels.

Here is an outstanding article on gearbox R&D and the metallurgy associated with:

I acually looked into getting a custom gear set made for the trans. There is alot of companies out there that make helical, and straight cut gears custom. You would have to send the factory set, and they would do the rest.

Yep, it would not be cheap to have someone else machine up a custom set. I'd love to reverse engineer just the stock 3rd gear for kicks and try out a higher strength alloy. A 4th axis CNC should be able to handle it as the profile is pretty simple. Might have my next project for my machine.

Yes that is what I have looked into. Also looked into different sets of bearings for inside the case. 3rd and 4th is the only gears I killed, and im sure most of the other people. Im swapping over to auto, but I have a very big desire to figure out ways to make the factory trans hold up alittle better. Really like you said getting a 3rd/4th gear cut with a greater strength alloy would definatly help.

Places like im sure would be up to the job.
