2G AWD 2G Transmission JDM Version vs USDM Help

So I haven't been able to find a thread on this but I sent my AWD GSX trans to a shop and they told me that the shifter on the trans is a JDM and I need a USDM version.

So my questions are:

1: What are the differences
2:Where can I find one
3: What would it be called without broadly looking up 'GSX Shifter'

Can you post pictures of the gear selector on the outside of the transmission?? there is also a transmission code that is stamped on the bellhousing on the top between the 2 middle most upright bolts. from there we can tell you what it is

I’m guessing they meant the shift levers on the trans the cables attach to are different.

The Evo 1-3 indeed has a different shift lever/shaft than the DSM; I tried to get one so that I could use a DSM transmission core in my Evo, but Mitsubishi no longer had that lever in stock. For Evo 1-3 it's part number MD740893, and it shouldn't be too hard to find someone who needs it. You indeed need the shift lever/shaft that suits your car (1G or 2G W5M33 in this case), it shouldn't be hard to find either since it never goes bad and it's not really something that people ever change.

So the second pic would be a 1g trans. You can see on the bellhousing where the VIN would be is just a dowel pin, the last pic is a 2g one, the giveaway is that where that dowel pin is on the 1g trans it’s another bellhousing bolt. IIRC the evo 1-3 shift fork is the same as a 1g. I COULD be wrong

looks like the evo 2 shifter in the pics from above. in that last pic there is 3 bell housing bolt holes showing, between the middle one and the one on the right theres a flat surface that would have some codes. can you post up a picture of those too?

So the first image definitely matches my transmission that swoops down (Photos are posted for reference). I have a FWD transmission that came out of a 97 dsm that has the shifter that matches the third image would that work into swapping it over? Or would i need a AWD specific?

i believe you can use it, youll need to hold the gear selector at a certain angle when you air hammer the one pin out otherwise itll get stuck. @twicks69 would be better to answer if you can use a fwd gear selector in an awd transmssion. hes the go to guy for all the knowledge

it would be a w5m33. so the MPZL trans just so happens to be the same transmission i picked up off a friend and sitting in my garage . the internals are the EXACT same as a 2g awd transmission. count the teeth on the front diff and make sure you use the matching transfer case. now with the fork IIRC you use the 2g shifter cable bracket and it would work with that fork, or was it the 90 ( i think? ) that has that secondary bracket so itll sit taller. can anyone chime in and add to this?

I would like to know if all I need is a shifter bracket because I’m about to take it off of the FWD.

Yeah it is a simple swap. Easiest way? Air hammer with a 3/16" roll pin punch attachment. Punch pin from the backside towards the front of the transmission. Remove lever arms, swap and done. You do not need the counterweight, either chop that off with a angle grinder and cut wheel or a sawzall with a carbide blade.
95-99 FWD and AWD DSM use the same levers.

Yes, count the teeth on the front differential if it is 58 or 57. I would expect it to have 57, which will require you to use a 1.074 ratio (29/27 teeth) 1997-1999 transfer case.

I would like to know if all I need is a shifter bracket because I’m about to take it off of the FWD.

Also is it possible to find one online? I can’t seem to find one or what it’s called exactly without looking up shift knobs and shifters that sit in the cab. Is there some kind of term I need to type in, or?

The shift selector arm is an obsolete part. You could try asking in a DSM classified group if anyone has a 2g shift select lever arm from a 2g FWD/AWD bellhousing.

Thanks guys seems I got this solved, shop said they can take in my FWD trans and swap them over. I appreciate the quick responses and help on this!
