Hey world.

I have an auto tranny in my 95 tsi.

All in all it seems like it is in good condition but i am experiencing a few quirks....

1. sometimes when I put it into drive from park it doesn't shift smoothly and sorta clunks into gear.

2. i am noticing a very small amount of slipping, where it wont immediately engage into the next gear.

3. sometimes when going down a hill and not applying gas it will downshift sorta abrubtly.

all of these things are not very noticeable at all but they are bothering me because i am thinking that the tranny is about to die.

is this a sign that the tranny is soon to go?

or does it have another few years left in it?

It clunks from P to D? What about D to R or R to D? Is it worse?

Going down a hill at what speed and in what gear? Od on is downshifts going down hills?

These trannys are not set up to shift that quickly, even tho it's an auto it still seems to take a second to shift sometimes..Your not shifting manually are you?

I have always wondered. What happens if you shift manually on an automatic tranny?

I know it won't "Blow up" your auto, i think the a/t(tcu) protects it self from up/down shifting when its not at a safe speed/rpm, but I don't think its a smart thing to do, might shorten the life span of the tranny and need a rebuild sooner than necessary. Especially when manually down-shifting, i've tried it and it didn't feel like a good thing to do to the a/t. There's better and safer things to modify to your auto for performance than try to manually engage the gears while driving just to get more fun out of it.

Depending on how you shift, nothing. If you shift at high rpm, or down shift to a high rpm, it will shorten the life of your tranny. It also starts slipping after a while. And sometimes can slip into a low gear, Thats what my car did. But I didnt shift manually. 30 to a slow down, slammed in 1 gear at 20 Mph.
Put in Lucas tranny oil, and some oil in the motor, and hasnt slipped yet.

If your going to be messing around with the lower gears of an auto..Only use them for launching porposes, or driving around town..If your using all the stock equipment with nothing else..If you have shift box or something of the sort, you can select whatever gear you please, without sacrificing reliability..

Slicks are you retarded bro..Youre downshifting manually just for the hell of it..Bad idea..that kind of stuff will kill your tranny soo fast.I can see downshifting into 1st if your brakes go out or you loose all non manual gears..

If you want to start "shifting"There is a sale on roadsurge shift boxes at the moment..Pm EagleTalonTim..

yeah it clunks going from park to drive but im pretty sure it doesnt do it when going into or out of reverse.

i always drive with overdrive on. speed is usually around 30-40 when it downshifts.

no i dont shift manually i let the computer do it all.

none of the problems are really that bad, basically i'm just wondering if anyone has a rough estimate of the lifespan of the tranny once these things start happening.

When you decel below 30 mph with od on it will most of the time shift into 3rd..

Sit in your driveway or street..Go from D to R, and R to D,, see if it clunks worse..

Your really fine, I see no real issues with the info you have given me..The slipping is the auto tranny shifting at high rpms,( only at higher revs). And that's what your describing.

Getting clunking during shifts? On the throtte in boost when it shifts? Or comepletyly off? It's going to shift harder when off the throttle, then it will if your light throttle..

Thread revival,sorry guys....

Ok.so my girlfriends 99 gst auto is doing the same things as the OPs,except for the slipping.when shifting out of park and into reverse or drive the car seems to "clunk" into gear.when you floor it or go heavy on the throttle it seems like it downshifts very harshly,to where the car jerks, almost like it downsifts twice or something?I'm going to change the fluids and the filter soon, and check for any worn mounts.anything else I should look for?
