So I was browsing the forums looking for some wheel specs so I could look for some decent used wheels. (I still don't know what #'s to look for there other than 5 lug)
I read about using 15" wheels to prevent going into OD. I don't get it. Wouldn't you just push the button to turn off the OD if you are just going to be doing short track pulls?

So, I guess I actually have two questions here.

What exactly does the OD button do for the Automatic?

and

What specs should I look for if I want some 17" or 18" wheels?

The overdrive button puts you into 4th gear..I Don't think using 15 inch wheels will prevent you from going into overdive/4th.. Most of the people using auto's have tried staying out of 4th when on a 1/4 mile track..They say it's just a dog in 4th..But that also will depend on your mods, and turbo..If you can keep your revs high enough in 4th gear you should be in boost anyway..

Your lug pattern is 5x114.3

For 17" wheels the most common seems to be a 17x8. Alot of people like to use the EVO VIII wheels which are 17x8 +38 offset, which look really good, and sit fairly flush.

It is your tire size that you will have to work out. I don't remember the stock size on a 2g or else I would help you out.

I know the wheels were 16s. I was talking about the stock 2g tires. I don't know what size they were. And you would have to know that to make sure you got the right tire for a 17" rim. And I don't feel like searching for it, that is on the OP.

OG tire size 215/55/16

or a 25.3" overall diameter

As for wheel size, wheel size doesn't matter.
Just make sure the overall diameter of the tires is the same front to back especially on an AWD.

The first Aftermarket wheels I got were 17's, and they were great.

225/50/17 fit nice, with an overall diameter of 25.9"

Currently.
Volk gt-7's
19"x 8" w/ 225/35/19 overall diameter 25.2"

19"x 10" w 265/35/19 overall diameter 25.3"

I do run with a Hubcentric spacer in the rear and had to roll the fenders, front and rear as well as stretch the rears.

Doesn't rub, and the ride is rough, but the car is used on the weekends, and will never see the drag strip.

Hopefully with new coilovers I can fine tune the ride, as well as the height.

I have 17" with 225/45 tires and according to the specs on wheel websites there only 0.04% difference in the rotating diameter! So its not that far away from stock. Also with overdrive when you hit that button you sacrifice torque but its normally just a cruise button and I've known people not to use it even on the highway but you do see your self using more fuel as the revs are higher if you don't use it! If your drag racing then 15's will see higher rev's and quicker speeds but I don't think you will need o/d. I like 17" as its not too big or too small for DD plus it still gets up the rev's pretty fast.

Pushing the OD button in prevents the transmission from selecting 4th gear. Releasing the button allows selection of 4th automatically.

With stock diameter tires at WOT the transmission will select 4th gear at 7000 RPM which is about 110 MPH. Keeping the throttle down in third gear at 7000 RPM will hit the rev limiter pretty quick.

And yes 4th gear on stock DSMs is doggy when first selected.

^^^Cool.

So, OP, now you know the stock tire size. So take that, figure out what size rim you want, and then what width tire, and then work out what size you will need to keep the diameter of the tire you choose the same as the diameter of the stock tire.

Just so you know since nobody has answered it correctly yet, the stock tire size on 1g and 2g turbo cars is 205/55-16. ;)

This is true for the OPs 96.

1997 and later AWDs came with 215/50/17 tires. See Wheel Size

I switched my 98 AWD Talon back to 16 inch wheels after 40K miles of commuting bent the wheels out of round.

My bad post 11 sirslex. Your car is not just a 2G turbo but an AWD 1996 Talon. The stock size tire for that car was 215/55/60, NOT the 205/55/60 mentioned in post 9.

No need for brain pain. The link from my post 11 will show what size tires fit and tirerack.com has technical data for tires that show revs/mile. Just pick a width that you like (and can afford) and select the sidewall height to keep the stock revs/mile. Why use math when you have the infernal web.

Aha.... Proved me wrong.... almost. You're right about them not being 205/55-16's, but they aren't 215/55/60's either.:p

They are 215/55-16's :)

edit: Actually it looks like the automatics came with the 205/55-16's while the 5 speeds came with 215/55-16's according to this http://www.sizemytires.com/vehicle/1996/eagle/talon

Matt,
I think you're right about the tires being 16s not 60s. At least my fat fingers provided a funny mental image. I tried picturing me getting in the Talon on five foot tall tires.

After some 320,000 miles in auto Talons the seat of my pants tells me that the transmission shifts more aggressively when OD is locked out. But it may be just that I drive more aggressively and the fuzzy logic is adapting to me.

Either way we (The Talon and me) behave differently with the OD button pushed in.
