Hello All,

I have a 91 Plymouth Laser, 1.8L, automatic trans, car is stock with no upgrades or anything like that.

Here is the problem I'm having:

Sometimes at idle, in gear, the idle seems to surge, let's say, between 700 and 1000 rpm's. Now it does not always happen, just occasionally. Here comes the big problem, that I can not figure out.

I'll be driving along, at any speed, and all of a sudden the transmission starts to downshift for no reason, I might be just idleing along or I might be accelerating. I could drive the car for a week without this happening or it might happen every other day or month.

When the car downshifts, the RPM's will jump to 3500 to 4000, the check engine light will come on, and the car will be running rough, I'll put the trans in neutral, pump the gas pedal, put the trans back in drive and the check engine light goes out and the car seems to run fine again.

The check engine light indicates code 14, but when I test the TPS everything tests fine. I took the connector and cleaned the contacts to make sure I had a good connection.

I have changed the transmission filter and oil, Cottman Transmission checked the trans and found nothing wrong with it. I talked with the local dealer about the possibility of the overdrive clutch being bad, but because it is so random, may not be the answer.

So I am wondering if anyone else may have had this problem and how I might be able to fix it. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like the TPS may be bad. If it works most of the time, that also means that most of the time when you check it it will check good.

Sometimes, a TPS will just develop a dead spot.

Update!

After checking out the transmission down shift problem, it was most certainly the TPS. Purchased a TPS from E-bay for 15.00, installed the unit and the Car has been working perfectly since.

Thanks to all those that replied!

Good deal!
