At last, the better side of 12.0 in the 14b powered Talon!!!

DJ--I missed that and didn't even think about logging at the track.....just all this hindsight stuff.....I will most likely look into the studderbox.....

Doug--that's another nice shot!

I haven't read too many great things about the stock evo fmic, so it's possible you were heatsoaking a bit. Especially with how much hot air the 14b is pushing out at that psi. You're getting off the line pretty good, but I bet with the 2-step you'd have those 60fts down another tenth, couldn't hurt to try right? Some timing control could only help and you definately want to get a logger on there at least to figure out where she sits currently.

Congratulations on finally achieving your goal Phil, your an asset to the community.

I'm actually surprised that your "only" running 21psi and the fact that its holding it to redline shows there still more in it.

Nice work man that is one good looking car doing so much on a stock turbo love it.Just out of curiosity does any one know what the record for the 14b is in full street trim with interior in and spare tire and jack as well?

I agree with Tyler - up the boost. I've even got mine set higher than that and my bolt-ons aren't even that good! :p

Thanks for the props and interest in this subject of DSM's. I appreciate the compliments bigtime. I can't help you with that particular number on a national scale, but I can give you some of mine.

Unfortunately, After my stock runs and my filter/catback runs, my spare and jack always came out. I can tell you that I ran 13.44@101 with full interior and stock cat still intact. I got down to 12.76@104 with interior in. 12.95@104 at the '98 DSM shoot out, with stock wheels, 12.85@105 with lighter forgeline wheels. I think the best pass I made before going to weight reduction mode was [email protected] with a best trap speed run of [email protected]. Hope that helps you a bit. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but there might not be that much instance or info with exactly full weight. Now that I think about it, the inspiration for me wanting to go fast on the stock turbo was Marc Hallman, and aside from wheels maybe being lighter than stock, he had 17's, he was probably full weight with spare to run 12.57@109 back in 1997 or so. I would shoot for that number if the full weight runs are your goal. Good luck!!! and thanks again.

Props to you Phil. Good to see an old schooler still in the game goin' fast with class, still making CT famous.:hellyeah:

Thanks Bob!!! I may step away for a bit, but the car stays in the garage and yes, can come out an make an appearance here and there. I'll try to keep CT on the map for years to come! Thanks again! And I was happy to see Doug after some time, it was nice. And of course, the pics he took....best ever of me and the talon!

Wow, congratulations!!

Incredible time and great to see an update :thumb:

Thank you very much for the props and interest! It means alot! I know, finally after 5+ years....an update.

I have run as much as 23.5 psi in the past and the power gain compared to how hot it gets is not worth it. As a matter of fact, at 16 psi the car makes 10 less WHP than at 21 psi. The major difference is torque....a 48 lb.-ft. increase from 16 to 21 psi. I have possible heatsoak on a few passes, granted the passes were quick to include the 11.75 best, with the EVO intercooler. Raising boost would only make that worse. It's possible that I may need to upgrade to a small, but thicker street core. Many have talked down about the EVO core, I figured it could handle the 14b. Anyway, I think there's a bit left without making any major changes. There are definitely different shift points to try now with the taller slick, and I think there is more left in the launch. I really don't think power is a real concern at this point. I did a dyno comparo in the past between 17-21 psi and the horsepower gain is very small as the boost goes over 20 psi.

Congrats on running 11's! Having spent about the same amount of time in the 11's as you did in the 12's, it's a nice feeling to finally take the next step.

Did you happen to log timing on the dyno? Another trick that I found helps small turbos is spraying methanol in the turbo intake. I tried it with a metal topped K&N filter, drilled and tapped for 1/8 NPT. After a dyno pull the inlet tube was ice cold and the car picked up 8-10whp consistantly.

WOW this has been quite an active thread. Once again congrats on such an awesome accomplishment. As for 20 psi on the street with my fwd. I did it for the torque. ITS AMAZING. Most of my time is spent driving the car like its a non turbo so heat soak doesn't worry me. I'm building my AWD to be the insane 2.3/ holset35 daily driver now so the fwd/14b is just holding me over. I'm curious to know sinc it wasn't in your profile, Do you still have power steering rack in the car as well? that could shave a few pounds going to the manual rack from a 1.8. It may only be good for a few pounds more but the dash could get hacked apart. I'm not sure how crazy you want to get with it though. To keep the intake temp down maybe some water/meth injection in the future? Wow as I am writing this I am in complete disbeleif that your running this good on the stock headgasket and head studs. Some of us dsmers with daily drivers pop the head gaskets. Do you drive this car on the street at all or is it strictly track? I ask because I'm contemplating getting an Aluminum driveshaft for my 90 but the like I said earlier it is going to be my daily. I'm thinking of some ideas I could give for you to get this thing even faster n the 1/4 as far as weight reduction but I'm not sure if you would have me commited to a mental institution or not. Anyways, Awesome car and good luck with it.

Hey has anyone built a stroker and put a 14b on it to just drive it around for some break in mileage? Just curious on the insanely quick spool up that would be. although it would choke out pretty quickly.

I want to see some videos of this beast!!!! Beautiful car its glad to see people running such good numbers with a basically stock setup.Love the headlight mod very practical and basic to do very good idea.congrats

I noticed the same thing back when i was running the 14b. It ran best at 20lbs, anything over 22 didnt net any gains. Its awsome to see you hit 11s! congrats man! And its cool to show everyone out there that you dont need the biggest baddest turbos to go fast.

Thanks for getting back to me on this that sounds very interesting I was just wondering what kind of goal I was shooting for. Another question for you What kind of sea level are you dealing with there? I'm dealing with 3500ft above sea level and as much as people think it doesn't effect a turbo car it does to a certain extent

Congrats Phil! Nice job man. I bet that feels good!

Car looks great. Keep it up!

:hellyeah:

Joe, thanks for the recognition and the props on the car!!! And, it does feel good! It's still sinking in that I'm not "stuck" at 12.0 anymore. Glad you came up here, means alot!:thumb:

lowell---Unfortunately, I have never logged my car on dyno or at the track. This is something I will surely want to do in the future to maximize potential. I have no real experience with those tools. That's a big power increase with the methanol, but, I'm trying to keep my combination as simple as possible, even if it forgoes a bit of HP. I don't ice intake manifolds, spray intercoolers, and things like that anymore. Never really did exept for a few attempts to hit 11's about 6 years ago. I just run it like it sits in staging with no alterations. Thank you for the idea though and I will consider all recommendations as time goes on. When I think I've left driving on the table, which, I definitely can improve at this point after only 6 passes on slicks, I don't generally look for more power, but, that time will come.
