Anyone using a Knock-Off External Wastegate?

Ive been using a knock off ssqv bov for about a year now, and I have had zero problems.
Now its time for an external wastegate, and I'm wondering if people have had good or bad experiences with them.

I took the risk of buying one after an acquaintance ran one successfully for a few months. Been running mine now for a couple months with no problems. I got it for alittle over $100 shipped so even if it fails, I won't feel like i've lost much. Good luck.

If it fails, then you could lose your engine. No.. I would not say you have lost much.

I used a knockoff for a while but could not take the thought in the back of my head of, "What if it doesnt open this time and I dont notice". I sold it to some honda guy and picked up a real Tial.

As for the knockoff SSQ, I hear those leak at around 7psi.

It's very rare that wastegates fail by not opening. There is always exhaust pressure, and should spring or diaphragm fail, exhaust will simply push it open and you'll run very little or no boost. I have never seen failed wastegate that made car overboost. In addition to all that,
you have boost gauge in front of you, so you know what's happening at all times.

I run an ebay wastegate myself, and have installed quite a few on other cars. Not a single one has failed.

Not true, knock off SSQV's hold just as much PSI as the real ones.

I wouldn't fear the "overboost", its not logical. You will need to worry about the opposite. If it fails it will be from poor sealing and leakage. My friend is using one that came with an SS Autocrome manifold another guy bought. We had his car on the dyno the other day and I noticed it was leaking off a little before it fully opened (evident because it was a little rich and I could see the smoke coming out). If you get one and it does the same, you could probably go the same route as the Ebay BOV's and get the name brand diaphragm to replace the knock-off one.

There has been many new "generic" external wastegates that have been introduced over the past two years since this thread was started. Surely someone has tried them out.

Please post your experiences with any of the generic/knock-off gates out there.

Specifically the knock-off Tials and/or the SSAC gates: Wastegates Performance Racing Products for International Sales from SSAutochrome Inc.

Well not to be a hearsay but one of my buddies on tuners told me he has been running one on his car with no problem for I think 2 years now. Its the ssac one 38mm. I will be purchasing it from them when I get my check on the 25th.

It all depend on the quality of your knock-off BOV and what compression the springs in your BOV can take but if you're going to a external wastegate with a 14b you will see no gain. And going by your profile there are a lot of things you need to do before thinking of an external wastegate. Check out the TECH section first for upgrade paths.

Make sure you pay attention to time stamps. This thread is 3 years old and was only brought back for current info regarding these gates. I'd assume that the thread starter no longer needs advice about his wastegate set-up.

Because of the owners that fail to maintain them. What does this have to do with wastegates?

Generic brands do not mean they are low quality. If you factor out the cost of R&D, and you can have a quality built product for less than half the price of the name brand. Without a thread asking about a product's quality (or lack there of), how would we determine what truely is quality and what is not?

I have seen a few SSAC type w/g's on Honda's and they had no problems. I have also seen a 1g with the Tial knockoff BOV and it also held boost just as it should.

99GST, I appologize, I admit I have no experience. I thought he was asking for opinions. I was not offering hollow judgment, I have ran knock off parts. I have a knock off Bov, and other parts, I just feel a wastegate knockoff is not a great idea.
"why are dsms so unreliable" What I meant by this, is that too many DSM'rs are simply cutting corners. People wonder why are cars break so often, buying the cheapest of parts is a good reason.
Again, I applogize, and hope I have not offended anyone. I am just old school DSM, and feel the need to not cut corners because of my long time DSM experience.

No problem, Matt. I'm just tired of seeing the same old "If it's not name brand, it's junk" statement.
I don't typically support knock-off products as the price difference is usually a minuscule amount, but in this case, the name brand is almost four times the price of the knock-off. This is what raised my curiosity enough to bring this thread back for more/current information about them.

I'd like to consider myself old school as well, but I'm also good at math. A new Tial 44mm gate is $350 shipped. A knock-off is around $90. If they both perform the same, where is my hard earned $260 going? You can only charge for R&D for so long before prices need to be adjusted for market change.

Almost 4 years on my knock off 38mm. It has been on two cars and 4 different motors. No problems so far. I also have a knock rs bov. Holds over 20 psi with no problems. Had a knock off rfl bov. It works fine too. I will be putting the rfl on a friends 420 turbo next year. I am also going to new IC piping on my talon. Looking for a tial or knockoff for that.

I ran one on my rx7 for quite a while before I sold the car, around a year. Maintained the boost level just fine, never had any problems, and I inspected it frequently to check the diaphragm for tears. I'm pretty sure if it will hold up to the exhaust from a turbocharged N/A rotary engine (9.7:1 compression ) it will take abuse from a dsm.

I don't agree with buying Knock offs but my buddy needed money so I bought a knock off Tial... It is a nice product and I ordered in a PIT, and Tial 38mm wastegate. The one he got is identical to the Pit with the design of the Tial. The spring is equal to a tial and everything. I wasn't happy about buying it ### that just gives ppl more of a reason to do it. But I must say, it impressed me...
