Anyone tried this intercooler style?

Heyas gang,
I am at my wits' end here and this seems to be about my last option for a FMIC on my car but I wanted to get some comments from experienced people first if you can help me out.

Here is my current list of mods:
1990 Talon TSI AWD
Evo 3 Ported/Polished Manifold
Evo 3 O2 Housing'
Evo 3 16G, Ported, Polished, 38mm Flapper
RC Engineering 550cc injectors
SAFC II Tuned by Buschur Racing to 20 PSI
2G MAS
Supra SMIC
Dejon Tool UICP


So far I have turned a best ET of [email protected]. I just can't seem to trap out higher than 100.**. When I was getting dyno tuned at Buschur, we noticed that the car was falling off on power substantially at the top of third gear, and through a few more runs that the power was steadily decreasing. We let it sit with the big blower fan on it and then turned again and power was back, obvious heat soak of the IC right? We all kind of decided the ECU ws picking up knock and pulling timing in third gear and up. So, I decided its time for a FMIC. There are many problems I ran into starting with losing my AC with pretty much anybody's FMIC kit. I spent the day talking to anyone who makes a kit for 1g DSMs and they all pretty much said 'AC is gone, cut this, remove that, move this to China cause it won't fit', etc. This is a daily driver and I refuse to lose my AC because I don't like being hot damnit. Losing the crash member is also not an option for me as death isn't worth a few tenths in a 1/4 mile I also am not a huge fan of systems like the one Road/Race offers with a Spearco/Griffin unit that hangs 1" or more below the bumper. So I came across this one and I wanted to get you guys' opinions/expertise on how well they work compared to a standard inlet/outlet on opposite sides setup.

Give me a heads up on this thing please! Also, assuming that cost isn't my main concern, but rather, keeping the AC, not hanging below the bumper cover and not losing my crash member are, what other options do I have that I may be missing?

I think buschur makes a front mount kit that is like that. Or maybe its dejon, who ever its been done and works great. Usually the core is small but that one looks nice to me. What are the dims?

Dimensions are:
Core Size: 22"X8"X3.5"
Overall Size: 29"x8"x3.5"
2.5" Inlet & Outlet One Side
3.5" Thickness Core

The Dejon one is similar, but very small, and I talked with Dave today and he said it wouldn't be adequate for what I am looking for.

Yeah , I looked at those, but I want to keep my crash member, so they won't work for me

what part on there are they removing that you want to keep on? Both have been able to put their bumpers back on slightly covering the core. I dunno maybe you're taking about another part and i'm just being dumb

The 1g long route kit has a pipe that goes right through the cross member in the bumper. You have to remove the bumper to run the pipe. At least thats what others keep saying. I dont see why that core would be inadequite. Its pretty large.

The thing you have to ask yourself now is, do I go with a smaller core so I dont have to cut the bumper and have performance issues maybe. I think that core you posted is fine for an evo. Or larger core and you have to cut the member to even fit. So you have to make a decision. Now on keeping the AC, my mechanic builds short route piping kits and never gets rid of the AC. He even fits that jpipe in there without removing the stock fan. so if you can weld you can get around that. The core size is up to what you wnat to do.

The core I posted looks like it would be more than adequate. I guess the question I'm asking is about the intercooler design itself with both the inlet and outlet on the same side. I had heard a few years back from some people on other forums that they sometimes cause turbulence inside themsleves which makes them inefficient. Any insight on this?

Well I quess its how the core is built. If the runners are seperated wouldnt it be just like any other intercooler. I dont see the difference, except the air runs in a U shape.

The second photo where you see the 2G with its front bumper off is actually an installation of an N/T converted to turbo. The piping for the fatory turbocharged engines will obviously be on the opposite side.

This kit is not cheap, however. It's about $900.

If you're going to use an intercooler with the in/outlets on the same side, i would use a top to bottom flowing intercooler with the endtanks on the top and bottom rather than the one in the first post. I think that flow would be better. Spearco makes an excellent top to bottom intercooler.

i used a 28 x 7 x 3 intercooler with 2.5'' straight inlet and outlet, went the long route with the passenger side pipeing, and removing my tow hook and small amounts of boxing the frame on the drivers side i got to keep my a/c, but it does look a little less appealing. it hangs down 3/4''. also 2 very small spots of the pinch weld on the bumper had to go

The Dejontool FMIC kit (includes core and all piping) lets you keep your AC, and is 399 or 475 depending on your turbo (down flow or up flow).

Kinda wierd that they add $76 for FMIC and pipes for a 16g vs for a 20g...

Give JR a call and talk with him. He is very helpful. I purchased his kit locally and he went out of his way to help me including picking up my bov for me and saving me a trip to tqfreaks.

His 7" 1g kit will allow you to keep your crash beam and does not hang below the front end and also allows you to keep your a/c, fog lights and even the cruise. Here is some pics of it installed on my 90 tsi. You also get detailed instructions.

Here is a pic during install so you can see the core by itself. My core is a slight upgrade from the standard 7" kit. I believe the standard 7" kit is 2.75 thick and mine is 3.5 thick.

It keeps your AC but not the fan, that cant be good when using the AC. I guess you would need a slimline fan.

Man that IS exactly what I want. Do you have any pics of the crash member mounted back on the car? I would really like to see how that goes back on. Did you have to cut it heavily? Did you notice a big difference from your previous setup?

Hey New2dsm I actually got sponsered by CXracing. They made a kit for the one sided intercooler on my car. The core you pictured is a bit smaller then mine. Dimensions (12/31/3)
But they make great products.
