anyone put a stock sunroof in a 2g.. My car didnt come with one and I'm really wanting to put one in... I dont know how aftermarket ones are...but i want one that works like oem so u can tilt it and open it all the way.. thanks guys

Go to a professional let them do it. Promise its worth it. You can get automatic ones or manual. Just cost more. Check your local interior shop.

You will lose internall support bu installing an sunroof that did not come from the factory. I wanted to do this and the mechanic convinced me not to bother. With the floor bar and strut bars I have I dont wanna to lose any straightness..........

Your mechanic is a moron.

Custom Care in MB, SC does sunroof installations on BRAND NEW CARS FOR DEALERS. if you go to a dealership and see say a 4g you want, but it doesnt have a sunroof. Do you know what they do, tell you they will get a car with a sunroof, take it to their local contractoed interior place, and let them do it. Same thing with alot of factory flipdowns and headrest TV options. same exact thing, and leather seats as well.

So do all the ford dealers, pointiac, mitsu and other dealers in teh area as well.

any custom shop that knows anything about custom work will be able to put a sunroof in with no problem. if the guy tells you your car is going to bend in half because of the sunroof, go somewhere else.

this modification is best left to people who know how to do it (custom shop). While yes you can attempt it your self, I would not suggest doing that.

you can get any aftermarket (non stock) sunroof installed, or get the actual stock sunroof that came on the 2gs.

good luck with whatever route you take

There is no additional support. You can shear off 80% of the roof's sheet metal with no effect. It's the side rail areas of the roof that matter.

This is true. Take a look at a DSM without a sunroof when the headiner is removed and you will see there is nothing there preventing the roof from bending in half. And the roof is so thin that it's not doing much for support alone.

I was originally gonna buy a factory sunroof roofskin for my GS-t and buy a used sunroof assembly and switch from a salvage yard and do this conversion. I still might. I love sunroofs but I hate aftermarket ones.

I know 2 people personally who have had the roof cut off another car and welded onto their car. One was a 1g that got a 2g roof w/sunroof welded onto it, the other was a 2g that had a 2g roof w/sunroof welded on. In my opinion, thats the way to go unless you really want an aftermarket one, then that can be done as well.

I'm not trying to do this myself.. but I have heard that if you put in a after market it will mess up with the body... I'm more looking for one that would be hard to tell from stock.. i want the vent shade and everything..... .... if custom shops put them in would it be possible to get a oem one? and about how much do they cost.. i'd pay 1,500 for it maye more if the quality is top notch... I want a sunroof so bad

So will just cutting the hole and dropping in the sunroof assembly, like the factory (or, whoever they subcontract the assembling to) did it. Cutting off one roof and installing another is the hard way. The very, very hard, unlubricated, painful way.

just buy a 2g ceiling panel with the sunroof hole cut out. strip the fabric off it and put some black on there because you know you want it anyway, install it.

Then get on the classifieds here and buy yourself a sunroof (if the guy selling the headliner doesnt have an extra one) and find a good shop.

They will already have a outline of where it is supposed to go oem, so they will just cut a whole, and drop the sunroof assembly in and seal it up.

It is really an easy job, you just have to have the nerve to cut your roof open, which I do not have or id do it myself....

definately not a $1500 job.

Ive also got a question on this then... will a factory 2g sunroof work in my car that doesnt have one installed in it yet? i didnt know if it would seal up the same because i know a factory moonroof rolls into where the acutal glass sits....

How much would it cost to have a custom shop cut the hole, bolt in the OEM Sunroof frame, and drop the glass? I will be doing this task this coming summer and am curious to know what type of financial damage I am setting up for myself.

I agree with the point that a hole should just be cut. Don't do the whole roof chop and drop. The supports for the car are on the edges of the ceiling. I have removed parts of my head liner for a moment to do some wiring, it is only a thin skin metal sheet. There is no threat of structural compromise by placing any sunroof in a 2G DSM that did not originally have the Sunroof option.

Well this is a old thread. But on your question. U can't just cut a hole in the roof and put in a factory sun roof,U can with a after market sun roof. The factory uses a flange on the steel part of the sun roof opening. Its thier to give the roof strength and is a seat for the sun roof glass gasket or weather strip. Most aftermarket sun roofs use a sandwich style frame that clamps to the inertia and outer parts of the roof skin. The factory sun roof is far more better than a after market sun roof. The factory style uses a gutter system and drains in case water gets past the gasket, and most aftermaker ones dont so they tend to leak on to what ever is under them.

Ah forgot. I picked up a complete roof assembly from pick and pull with the drains and wiring. It was about 95 dollars on a holiday weekend. Unless u know some one at a shop u will pay up to a 1000 to 1500 for the proper way. Their is a lot of R and I (remove and install) . The windshield and quarter windows ,rear hatch, interior trim panels and dash. The drains are why most of that has to come out. Then body and paint labor . Hope that gives u a idea.

Tell you what, If you have a turbo car I'll trade you. I have a sunroof and hate it.

That kinda makes me want to cry. I can get the whole setup (Proper) from a DSM Parts dealer I trust, and have done business with for 10 years. He is also a member on this forum. I was wondering about the drain setup. Thank you for sharing that. It makes me feel better about the OEM install (which is what I want to do. My car has a cracked roof from falling ice, she has been dinged alot lately and needs paint and ding repair anyway. My biggest scare of your statement is the whole window removal for the drainage/water management system. I can understand the interior trim & dash removal, but why all the glass?

You mentioned a cross bar in the previous post? Would that not be part of the braces that come with the sun roof motor mount, switch, and rail mounting? Doesn't it just completely bolt in to the existing supports on the four sides of the cockpit?

Thank you for your wisdom and response to this even if it is an old thread.

No thanks, I am wanting style of substance at the moment. My insurance won't let me play with turbos yet. They said it would drastically increase my rate. Especially since I just moved to MD from OK.

Drivers on the east coast are crazy, especailly on the beltways... Turn signals are a suicide sentence.

The glass removal is so that the roof skin can be replaced.

Ok thank you for clarifying that. I didn't think there was an additional cross bar required.

So you are saying the glass would need to be replaced if one was going to do a full roof replacement? i would not need to have the glass removed if I was just going to have the hole cut, frame bolted, and glass dropped in place?
