Let me guess... Mike? (and I'm not talking about GSX TC1 up in Oceanside)

I just installed my new head gasket, The person I talked to at autozone told me the torque on the head was 37 pounds which is way off from what my manuals now tell me. I started it up before I bought the manual and it was pouring out pure white smoke out of the exhaust. What are the chances I blew the new head gasket again or do I just need to go back in and torque the head bolts down a litte more? I had the car on for maybe 30 seconds.

2nd syncro is gone... what the hell?

looks like the trans will be coming out for a rebuild. hopefully it will be cheap considering the trans has been rebuilt with double syncro's before.

i went and grabbed some redline. it didnt fix the problem, which sucks. guess i wont be getting my turbo any time soon, again sucks. oh well

reliability > power

any one have any experience tearing these transmissions down? all that this transmission needs is a new second gear syncro ( will replace all while its torn down unless there is serious damage elsewhere ).

I have done a few transmissions in my day but nolonger have the proper tools to do it ie.. press and gear separaters. I can take it apart minus separating the gears in which you must do to get to the synchros and you can have a machine shop do the actual synhros unless with them being recently rebuilt it will come apart a bit easier. I can get you a link to do the entire job yourself if you would like

Tranny Rebuild

i have tried ripping one apart however, i was never able to get the mid case off for some reason i ended up having to pull it apart enough to get something i dropped inside it. ( i was replacing the VCE with a welded center ).

i ahve a buddy that is buying a press and i would have full access to it... how tall would the press need to be in order to remove the gears and such?

the gear separators is that a specific tool or just the claw type pullers?

they look like these

you let me know when and ill swing by and help you pull it apart if you want

actually the miramar base has a gear press they will let me use if this was to happen.

im currently thinking of every possible thing that could cause this without being forced to pull the transmission...

I just find it too odd that it went from good to bad in a matter of seconds ya know? i did notice today during lunch that the rubber clutch line is wearing a bit where it was rubbing on the intercooler pipes( piece of the t-bolt clamp )

after work im going to see iff it balloons or not, if so i'll be parking the car for a few days untill i can get a SS braided one and hope that the stock line actually comes loose without breaking the rest of the line

try and see if the clutch is dragging. as a dragging clutch is more evident in the 1-2 shift than any other gear.

On a flat surface with the car in gear and the clutch pressed in bring the revs up to the 5k-6k range if the car creeps forward the clutch is dragging and it will be an issue in the adjustment or the hydraulic system but in your case most likely the hyd system.

It could be a little bit of clutch fade also. the lines could be losing the static pressure and when you push in the clutch initially it isnt fully disengaging the clutch giving you the grind. and on the 2-3 shift the lines have built the static pressure back up the same with the other gears.

Or the rubber line.

Dont worry Ed im pretty sure in the next year or so, your going to walk into Kris' garage, it will be converted into a full blown auto shop specifically for DSMs, Lift and all.

i will try that today then hopefully it isnt a sync. i'd really rather not have to have this transmission rebuilt if i didnt need to.

should probably note that when the car is low speed/stopped second gear does not grind at all. in fact it slides in as if nothing was ever wrong

nope wont happen Im actually getting burnt out. I never have time for the family anymore. probably calling it quits on the mechanicing after thes last few projects.

Gufi, when you changed the fluid did it have any brass in it or any other metallic material?

Let me put it this way, it looked like brown(oil)/copper(syncro i assume) candy paint in a bucket

there were a few very small pieces of ferrous metal in the bucket ( grabbed them with a magnet )

if it is brass then it would only be possible for it to come from the synchros. now the ferrous material could only be either cast flashing from the case in which would no be as bad as the possibility of the material being part of a slider assy. but those are both aluminum. and thats the only ferrous material in the trans. are you sure it wasnt a few pieces of cast steel. darker in color.

hmm, true, that i can understand... spending time with the family is always a plus...

Would you still be up for doing some ECMLink tuning in your off time? or maybe in a year or 2 be up for a GSX swap if your still in town?

ferrous would only be metals that allow magnetization right? aluminum is non-ferrous and not attracted to magnets.

and these very small ( smaller than 1mm-1.5 mm at most ) were attracted to my magnet that i slopped around in the oil.

however now that i think about it i cant remember of i cleaned them off or if they were actually attached to the magnet but the size of them i doubt they would just stick from oil ( they were at the edge of the magnet and not flat )

the rest was all brass, but quite a bit of it. hopefully not all from 2nd gear ( or if there wasnt a problem with second there likely will be now )

sorry yes for some reason I linked ferrous material to the signs they put up over the grinders at work "NOT FOR USE ON FERROUS MATERIAL" as grinding aluminum is bad.

Its likely they came from the input shaft where the reverse gear meets it or second gear as these are the two highest wear areas inside the trans when referencing the gears. and being it is a 2nd gear issue I would lean towards that more than the other but you would be surprised. You will never know till you crack it open.

aluminum would be ok as it is non ferrous. steel/iron/stainless

hopefully it doesnt end up being something internal. unless something just flat broke or something? possibly i managed to bend a shift for or something...

still strange how its almost as if 2nd doesnt want to go in at all when moving when all 6 gears require no effort to get into gear when stopped.( or moving for the rest ).

well im throwing in the towel and calling it internal related.

if the car is moving and rpm goes to idle at around 15 mph it wont grind so thats how i'll shift it untill i can get it rebuilt. sucks but look like no racing for me for a bit

Since El Diablo is back and working my N/T DSM, Gray Gretchen, decided its clutch had too many miles on it and broke. Who knew the stock clutch would only last 175,000 miles? Anyway, I ordered a new clutch for it Saturday and this morning there was an Exedy clutch box sitting on my front doorstep! WOOT! I got pumped and then when I opened it all that was inside was the eBay F1 clutch I ordered, no Exedy parts here. :(

Time to get Gray Gretchen back on the road now! Whos done a 420A clutch install? LOL
