So I'm not looking to relocate my alternator, but I don't want one of the craptastic stock alternators either.

I was wondering if there is a racing alternator that is great quality that does not require relocation.

I'm not really looking for anything passed 75 amps but if that is all I can get I'll look into it.

Saturn alternators don't require relocating, just a little modification to the alternator itself.

Oh, well that makes me feel a little dumb. I had always heard of people relocating them at the same time so I had assumed you have to LOL.

Thanks anyways :D

I think you could go with a 92-94 galant alt. I am not to sure on this but their 95 amp, like i said i am not 100% positive on this my friend that did it to his was telling me about it. The only difference is the 10 mill. bolt is a 12 mill. so you have to open up the connector a little. He has had no probs with that at all, just look it up or maybe someone will chime in on it.

You could also look into getting a rewound alternator. They have a higher output and bolt directly in.

I'm interested in this. What exactly does rewound mean and how much more do they typically cost and where could I find one?

Awesome thanks! I heard running that much amperage would cause your injectors not run the same, any truth to that?

Here's the brief overview of what is done:
Rewinding an Automotive Alternator
Basically, it gets wrapped with more wire.

Here's some general pricing:
MrAlternator will custom make one, 130amps. I'm waiting to hear back from them if its an OEM unit rewound or if its the own custom alt. I'd rather have an OEM housing with upgraded internals so its guaranteed to fit. They said $230, lifetime warranty.

AutoElectric (like James92Tsi said) will only do 100amp rewound alts. They wont go higher because they wont warranty it higher. I guess since James92 has a 92 they also do 1G alts. They quoted me $230 but a $50 core refund if you send them back your dead alt.

AlterStart will rewind the stator for 135amps. So its an OEM alternator (just the housing) with a rewound stator, heavy duty brushes and diodes. Basically custom internals in a factory 2G alt. Its $230, full warranty.

That's from 2003. The price of copper has gone up, so the price of rewinding may have too.

Thanks for all the information everyone. This will give me a lot to think about. I'm hoping to not have to replace my alternator again anytime soon and was looking into getting a good one now that I have my power steering leak all worked out. Thank god for over sized o-rings!

For the price of some of those alts you can go with a sat alt and a relocation kit, now I know the op said his intents were to not relocate. At the price points your looking at it might be worth it as it really cleans the engine bay up and frees up some room. Another thing to look out for is the classifieds I picked up a rebuilt sat alt and relocation kit for cheap.

Saturn (GM Alternator) are the best choice really. They are cheap and damned reliable, they even have the cover that will prevent your power steering from killing your alternator if it happens to leak.

I have owned 3 saturns, and my mother has owned 3. 6 Saturns, mine probably totaled about 200k miles while I owned them. Her first one was 206,000 miles one owner, second was 120,000 one owner, and the third is now at 62k miles. Never once replaced an alternator. Just bust out a dremel, do a nice clean grind job. And your golden. You can find them on junkyards all day every day for 30-50$ a piece.

Wow, I am really glad I posted about this. I am defiantly going to grind down everything and make it fit.

Anyone know if this will use the stock belt length and if not what the new length would be?

i thought the canadian eclipse and gvr4 alternators were 90 amp output

Yep. That's is true.

Get an alternate from a Canadian DSMer and you'll have a bolt-in upgrade for cheap.

Im using the stock belt just fine on mine, just be sure to get it lined up on the pully as its a bit wider than the one on the stock alternator.
