Aftermarket Valve Cover?

buy a 1/4" torque wrench, set to 48 inch/lbs= problem solved.

Uhm Learn to read. I allready said I am not buying a torque wrench that will only get used on the valve cover. A torque wrench that measures in inch lbs is useless to me. It still does not feel like the damn thing is on there good enough. I am OCD about shit and it has to feel like it is on there. When I barely feel resistance Less than 7 or 8 ft lbs then that shit isnt on there... at all.

Don't even bother using a ratchet in my opinion. Just put an extension on the socket and tighten by hand. You can reach 3lbs without the ratchet at all and it will be much harder but still not impossible to overtighten them.

Also, the "correct" way to tighten the bolts is to start with the inside bolts in a criss cross pattern, then do the outside bolts.

I found the pictures for the only aftermarket 4G valve cover that I've ever seen. It looks awesome, but there's little benefit given the amount of work that it took to fabricate this. This is a 1-off VC as far as I know.

Uhhhmmmmm learn to read...he's OCD about them shyts. Haha...if it came down to cracking that many VCs...I'd at least see if Auto Zone or Advance Auto has an inch/lb torque wrench to rent out. Hell, if they do, you can just do the work in their parking lot. New VC gasket set, torque to spec, give them their crap back, and roll out.

Paul, you are correct, that is a one off piece. The car it is on now is still the one pictured but he is not the one who made it nor had it made for his car. I can't recall who he got it from but I remember him saying it was not cheap whatsoever. I'm going to talk to my welder next week and see if he could make something up similar to that but using stock plug depth. I don't see it being easy to accomplish but it will be interesting. He is making a jig for all the valve covers I sandblast now so that should be a good template for him to work from.

If he can make it to look anything like that one I'd be interested. I actually would like to get a hold of this guy and see if he'd be willing to sell it.

I would guess at least double that amount.

At least double more like 3 to 5x consider how much time had to go into it depending on what the guy/shop charges hourly.

Once you had a jig and all the parts figured out you could do them faster but not a one off.

I talked to him before and he won't sell it. If I had to guess a price if my fabricator can do it, it'd be upwards of $200 which most people aren't willing to pay.

If your guy were to charge $200 for a VC that looks like that I'd buy one for each of my 2gs.

Also, I was wondering who owns the VC and if he has the name of the man who fabricated the VC. I am more than certain people would/will buy these VC's if they were produced. Even if the fabricator only made 10 or 20 of them I'm sure they would sell.

If I could get 20 or more people I doubt it would be much more than that. He has great prices and does awesome work. I've dealt with him for quite a while I'll be talking to him more about it Tuesday or Wednesday to get a better rough estimate from him. It wouldn't be a one off but like you said Steve he is going to have all the measurements from making my jig so it will be a good base for him to start from. I do have a few concerns with retaining the stock gaskets but a cover like this would make easy options for crank case venthilation.

Then I'd get used to a cracked valve cover.

I couldn't have said it better.

listen to these guys if not learn to use proper torques and a torque wrench that reads inch lbs is more useful than you give credit to. over torquing leads to either cracking or striping out the hdwr or the threads. but hey what do i know about torque and all i just a dumb helicopter mechanic that does it for a living.:D

I understand the stock ones are very fragile. I'm up to 20+ at the shop that are cracked right on through because of people overtorquing them. It wouldn't be so bad if they were thicker like the Hyundai covers are but I understand people's laziness of not torquing them to spec, I'll admit I cracked a few over the years due to it also.
