420A Aftermarket valve cover bolts

I'm looking for some bolts that hold the valve cover on to replace the stock ones. They seem to bottom out before there is enough torque to fully seal the gasket. I've changed the grommets multiple times but all the aftermarket ones are a similar shape and it doesn't help. Even the measurements of the stock ones would be helpful so I can place an order for some. I've been chasing this same leak for damn near 4 years and spent a ridiculous amount of money and time trying to fix it, and bolts are the last item left on the list. Thanks again guys.

When I did bolts for the 4G63 rocker cover I used a caliper to measure the depth so they wouldn't bottom out. Would that work for you?

I took the rubber grommets out and just use washers that fit and flange head bolts. Torque them per the sequence. I have never had a leak.

They are M6x1.0 I lost a couple of mine on my 2.4 swap and had to measure them to get replacements at the hardware store.

all you need to do is double up the washers on the VC bolts.

if that doesn't work, get a sealed catch can.
ditch the vented oil cap and the filter.
VC >> catch can >> intake tube

it will keep a slight vacuum on the crank case and keep your gaskets from leaking.

next time you need something to do, connect a vacuum gauge to the intake tube, where the line to the VC connects (or should connect).
rev your shit to 7K and see how much of a vacuum it pulls.

Using 2 washers definitely crossed my mind a few times. I was always worried about stripping the threads in the head though since they're aluminum and not very deep in the first place. I've had a few JY heads that had stripped holes, but they were more than likely overtorqued. If it works, it works and I'll do it.

I got some bolts from the hardware store and got an extra set of washers from the junkyard just in case. I'm on the lookout for a PT valve cover as well. Hoping to luck out at the JY for that too

Oh. The only ones I've seen that are aluminum are the ones that say 2.4 DOHC Turbo Twin Cam or something like that. But they were still the same shape. I like the 2.0 cover but to each his own. When I did my 2.4 bottom end swap I left the 2.0 cover on for the sleeper effect..... altho it turned out to just be an overall slug so I don't think anyone was questioning anything anyways

Even if it says 2.4 I can get it shaved down so it says nothing at all. My local machine shop has a variable angle platform on the mill. I think if it were shaved and I painted it with some metallic flake it would look badass.

I shaved one and powder coated it and gave it to my buddy for a gift, it came out pretty nice.

I got my 2.4l valve cover for my 420a from a Plymouth Breeze.
It came with all the valve cover bolts and grommets. I can measure those later if you want.
The 2.4l valve cover does use a different gasket (I believe a corner or two are rounded off instead of squared off like the regular 2.0l cover). Although I think I asked @dsmcrzy about it once, and he said he uses the regular 420a 2.0l gasket in his 2.4l valve cover.

The difference is in the cylinder heads. The 420a valve cover gasket will work fine. The Dodge Stratus also has a compatible valve cover. I just need to do some shopping at the JY and see whichever one looks best to me.

Yeah I use just a regular 2.0 gasket because it’s what I had off hand and it’s worked just fine. I bought 10 of them off rock auto when they were on whole sale for like $5 .

Here’s a pic of the VC I used. It’s from the 2.4L engine but not the SRT engine as the spark plug bolt holes are different.

I used a junkyard engine for experimenting. When you put the 30mm bolt next to the stock bolt you can see it's a little shorter. I tried it anyway since it caught threads. Not enough threads though, and it stripped the cylinder head before full torque was applied. So 35mm is the correct length you need.

For future reference: the needed bolts for a 420a valve cover are M6x1.0x35mm
