Aftermarket Oil Pressure Gauge Questions

I currently have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed that has a leaking fitting at the OFH. The fitting is busted and needs to be replaced so I figured I would just purchase a new setup. However, I've realized I have some questions that I'm hoping the community can help answer.

My questions are as follows:

1. Mechanical vs Electrical. Which one is more accurate? Does it matter?

2. In looking for a new gauge I found a product offered by ExtremePSI called the "Remote Oil Pressure Sending Unit Kit". The vendor claims in the description that this solves the problem of electrical sending sensors failing from excessive vibrations when screwed directly into the OFH. I have included a link below to the product. Its just a SS line with connectors that allows the sensor to be fitted without screwing directly into the OFH.

Has anyone had a electrical sensor fail from being screwed directly into the OFH? Anyone currently using this product?

I say electrical any day. Having high pressure hot oil inside the cab is just asking for it. From what I've read they almost always leak. I have the relocation kit but I haven't used it yet sense I'm not putting my motor in till Saturday. I've looked it over and it's pretty basic and an easy install.

Mechanical is generally more accurate, however, like stated above, hot oil running through the cabin = no bueno. I would stick with a known good quality company and electric gauge.

As far as a relocation, I don't find it necessary. I've been running electronic sensors in the OFH for years with no problems of them going out. Most of my cars have solid mounts, or at least urethane, and none have balance shafts. No problems in the 5-6 years I've been using them.

I'm definitely leaning towards an electrical gauge for the same reason everyone else has stated. Just not really fond of the potential for hot oil leaking in my cabin.

Really my biggest concern was the electric sensor being effected by vibrations. I hadn't heard anything about this until I saw the kit at ExtremePSI, so I suspected it might just be a precautionary part. You know how the vendors are... "Buy this part and you'll never experience this problem again!", even when the problem doesn't really exist

Well I run the autometer electric gage and I'm on my 3rd or 4th (can't remember) sending unit. It has to be from vibration becasue everytime I change them out when the gage stops working it fixes it right up. If you go this route I'm telling you from experince to get one from a place like Summit or your local parts store if they keep them in stock so when it goes out, and it probably will, you can get one within a day or two because they come with a year warranty. I personally went Summit because I get next day shipping for regular price (guess because of location). Ebay might be a little cheaper but when it goes out you'll waste time trying to get warranty for the sender.

FWIW, I have had two Autometer sending units fail running them right off the OFH. I am now running the remote mount to avoid the problem.

Any good brand name electric pressure gauge will be just as accurate as a mechanical one, imo. Stay away from cheaper brand like Glowshift and Prosport. Go for Autometer or AEM.

Remote mount your sender, all you need is a bit of -3AN line and some fittings.

You get what you pay for on electronic oil pressure gauges. Stack, Defi and Autometer Elite Series are the way to go. Pricy, but this is the most vital gauge you can have (wideband too I guess), a bad gauge can cost you a motor.

Newb question but ofh stands for oil filer housing? Also what size are the fittings in the housing side? Remote mounting sounds like a good idea I just don't know what size fitting I would need. Also is the fitting a straight or 90? Thanks

After all the responses I've been getting I think I will just purchase the remote mount kit. Better safe than sorry. Plus, I go through withdrawals whenever the car breaks down.

Yes, OFH is oil filter housing.
The fitting size is 1/8BSPT NOT NPT!

Buy the kit it comes with everything you need.
