Hey guys, I've got a 90 TSI AWD, I've decided to get a rebuild. My goals are (for the future with the appropriate supporting mods) 500awhp. I have done lots of research but I would like some specifc advice on the build.. I was thinking Eagle H Beam rods and Weisco pistons. one of my quesitons was is there a benfit to going .20 over and all that.. or is this done only to clean up the cylinder walls. I figured since I've got the motor out I mine as well do it now. What other things should I do to the bottom end? I also was thinking of just going with a stock head , as I'm not going to put it all back together and hit 500.. I'm gonna build up to that, so no need in going that far.. I figured this way the bottom end is done and then all I gotta do is swap the head with a built one so I dont have to take out the whole motor again once I have the larger turbo and supporting mods.. My plan was to max out the 14b on the stock head and built bottom end, and then move up. and replace parts to reach that 500awhp goal. Is there a flaw in my way of thinking. Anyone with experience please point out to me what I may not be seeing or what experience has taught you so that I may go about this without too many surprises or, "Damn, I should have done this or that"... I Appreciate the help....

Sounds like you have a good grasp on your goals. For 500whp the Eagles and Weiscos should be ok. I would recommend you remove the balance shafts when you put it all back together. As for the bore size, you can't overbore the 4G63 enough to get any major change in displacement. You only need to bore and hone the block to clean them up. However pistons only come in common overbore sizes. That is why you usually will go with a .020" overbore. My only other recommendations would be ARP main cap bolts, head studs, and a good head gasket. Good luck.

Thank you, I like to plan things out and know exactly what I'm doing first.. Yes I had planned on doing the balance shaft removal and also the EGR block off, and DEFINATELY the ARP hardware. What head gasket would you suggest. My two choices (money aside) are the Cometic and the SCE ICS Titan... Which would be better. I'm leaning towards the titan. Let me know what you think.. Appreciate the advice, suggestions, and knowledge.

Never heard of a titan head gasket, id go with cometic, just because of their reputation, but its all personal prefrence really. Just make sure to deck the head and block to ensure a good seal for the HG. Also, is this thing gonna be your daily driver?

... Kudo's to you for having some idea of what you're doing!

Now my question is if you have any idea how much all of this costs. Put together a spreadsheet that has parts on the left, projected costs, and where you're going to buy them. This will organize your thoughts and give you an idea of how much everything will cost, as well as how much each individual "stage" of your car will cost as you build it. Ie, you'll know how much cash you have to have before you tear the motor apart to rebuild and reinstall, and then you'll know how much money you need to replace the fuel system etc.

Is this going to daily driver/just weekend car/track only? This effects part choices as well. I would suggest getting in contact with a good machinist. Any of the big names Buschur, Magnus, Engintecs, etc...

If you are building it yourself, I would definitely invite the help of someone who has rebuilt a motor before.

I'll add more later, I have to leave work.

I have alot to say but i am at work now so i will get on later and let you guys know more.. its going to be a track star. i have 3 other cars...Im in GA for work, when I get back im tking car to a shop in louisville ky.. the swap shop.. already projected almost every cost i can think of.. more later gotta go.

"Now my question is if you have any idea how much all of this costs. Put together a spreadsheet that has parts on the left, projected costs, and where you're going to buy them"... I have already done this.. Good looking out though. I called a few places. I actually started a thread in regards to one of the places I called, I wont name the place.. but I wasnt pleased at all. However, I am taking it to a ship thats about 3 hours away from here.. Ive heard good things about them and already talked to him and he seems to know his stuff and seems to be a nice group of guys. Well this was my reason for going to the TITAN, I was told that the cometic was good but to go with a copper gasket, and also because this particular gasket was o-ringed or something like that. I read all the info on the gasket at FFWDConnection and also at slowboy.. Anyone else had any experience with the TITAN? If you want to know my list, I'd be more than happy to try and relist it, but I dont have it with me as I am not at home. The only thing I'm torn over is what turbo to go with once I'm done breaking in the motor with the 14b, (as long as it is still in good shape, dont want it blowing a freshly rebuilt motor.)... Thinking the Big 16g or something in that line.. or the "50 Trim" I know the 16g isnt acceptable for the 500hp goal.. but its an upgrade towards that direction.. ### like I and others have said.. I'm gonna do this in steps.. that way I can have a learning curve... not just jump in the car and have all this power and not know how to tune it or deal with it or anything like that.. Well I think I've gone on for long enough. Let me know what you guys think. Talk to you later.
