Ok so im going to be rebuilding my 97 gst. The car has 277k miles on a engine that I was told had been rebuilt before but the guy was....not all there if you catch my drift. I don't really want to get into the bottom end of the engine, but is it a good idea to replace anything while I have the engine out anyways? This is my first time even pulling an engine let alone rebuilding one so everything im going to be doing is based on the information I have found on the web. Plan on running with 272 cams. Do I need to beef up my springs and valves? Any advice would be awesome.

If you have it out it would be best to just put new bearings and rings with a re-hone and new gaskets. Then you'll know what you have in the bottom end. And do the timing belt and components. It all depends on your budget and time also.

Budget is not really a problem when it comes to doing a project right. I will save up and just let the car sit until I have enough money to do what is right. I mean im not going to throw 6gs at the car but possibly looking at a solid 4gs just for the parts I want.

Ok then I would just go thru the motor and if you know how then check your cylinders and bearing journals to make sure there within spec or have a machine shop do it. Just go thru the whole thing to make sure everything is good that way you won't have to worry about it once you put it back in.
My 6bolt I just built I just went thru and put new stock pistons, rings, oil pump, bearings, BS delete, water pump, hydraulic tensioner, timing belt and pulleys, all new gaskets, valve stem seals and valves, and new hydraulic tensioners. Had the block hot tanked and crack tested and had the head hot tanked to clean it all up.
Depends on your end goals with the car you could do forged internals or a stroker kit. And upgraded lifters and springs. The more you do know the less you have to do down the road when you throw a bigger turbo on and crank the boost up ( and of course all the supporting mods for that but that's a different topic)

Yes I did plan having the engine checked out at the shop because I do not know what im looking at. So pretty much what you are saying is replacing every moving part on the block and all bearings and seals inside the block? And the parts I would like to run, not sure what the best brands are yet or what flows with what, but the cams alone are 500$. Kelford 272 cams along with the upgraded head set up to run those cams. I chose 272 because they seem to make the most power for the set up im looking for.
As far as other parts, like 3in headers with full exhaust, along with bigger intake, FMIC, BS delete, boost controller, gauges, bigger turbo, fuel pump with lines and rail, bigger injectors, lighter flywheel, and the rebuild kit for the engine. That's not including the list of OEM parts I plan on replacing. I still have a lot of research to do. So once again any suggestions would be great :thumb:

Yes start with the engine then on to your clutch/flywheel/ transmission then go thru your suspension and just make sure everything on the car is in good working order. Then work on the go fast parts. You may want to start with a way to tune like dsmlink then a wideband, fuel upgrades, turbo, fmic. Look over the upgrade paths on here and they'll give you a good idea which way to go. And search and read then search and read some more :) you will learn a lot on here if you put the time in.
