98 gsx problems

I've been working on my 98 gsx just dropped a motor in it with a 1g cas on it. I got it started up today but it idles kind of rough, up and down. I can kind of smooth it out when I move the CAS.

Does anyone have a clue about this- when I press on the gas pedal the car wants to die. It doesn't Rev at all. Also the tach and speedometer are way off. The tach says 4k when its at a idle and the speedo says 40mph?? whats up with that

This is what I had to redo when I did the 6 bolt swap because I did it wrong the first time.

Let engine warm up
ground ecu
adj timing to 5+ degrees
adjust tps/ throttle cables
check for boost/vacuum leaks

and that's all I can remember

I dont know about grounding the ecu, but i jsut hooked up my timing light to plug wire 1, hooked up the timing light to the battery +/- and pointed it at the crank pulley and spun the 1G cas until it showed 5 deg. BTDC...there was no ECU grounding involved for me??

but yes, check for boost leaks, that sounds like a major problem.

Sorry, I forgot only early model 2gs have a service plug that allows you to ground the ecu. Doing so will make the engine idle much more steady which also makes reading the line on the crank easier as well. Unless you have dsmlink, then you can ground the ecu with a click of a button.

Other things to also check are the base fuel pressure if you upgraded the pump and readjusting the deadtime on the injectors if upgraded aswell.

I fixed the Idle issue kind of. I found some wires weren't connected to the ecu, someone must've had a SAFC hooked up to the car before me. now the car idles great but it's high. My gauges are also stil messed up. with the car sitting there with NO key in it or anything the tach reads 3k. ??

Somebody probably removed the needles for gauge overlays or something...
Previous owner of my car had them so screwed up that with the car off the tach said 4100 rpms, the the speedo read 30 mph

What Would do in your case is turn the car off. remove the needle, and place it at the egde of the tach with the little stop...

The 98/99 ecus don't have the Ground Terminal Set Base Timing function.

You need to use a ScanTool or EvoScan and send the Base Timing command.

Or you can log timing at idle and try to match the readings on your logger and the timing light.

If you are Flashing your ecu, I've added a Ground Terminal Set Base Timing function to my CeddyMods.



The Gauge Cluster readings is kinda weird, most likely have a wire cut or disconnected somewhere. Check Ground and +12v going to cluster.
(Do they read zero with the car turned off?)

when the key is out of the car, the tach reads 2k and the speedo reads at 0.

it actually looks like all the gauges are wrong not just those two, the gas gauge is off, stuck at 3/4 tank. Temp gauge is off, always goes up to H, turbo boost is stuck in the middle.
