Ive read mixed reviews on the reliability of the 2g eclipse. I dont have a lot of money but ive always wanted one of these cars. So if taken care of the way its supposed to be, how long do these cars usually last before major work has to be done to it? 98 eclipse OBO that is the link to the car i want to buy...thank you :hellyeah:

My 420a was a great car. Comfy, reliable, sporty. Just make sure the mantainance get done and they will be incredibly reliable. My talon died at 170k by way of boost. I had a neon with the same enginge running strong at 240k. They are good cars.

Its all personal prefrence. I got my 96 with a bad tranny for 2k. I would do it again. The car looks clean and has quite a few aftermarket parts that come with it. I would try to pick it up for 2300 myself. But i like the engine.

Just offered him the 2300 but he sold it...im gonna keep looking for one though =] Thanks for the advice though, glad i found this forum.

Buy it. Its an amazing car to own. And there are not may left in such good condition. Well worth the 2600 hes asking. Make sure you text drive and then haggle from there. I paid 2000 for mine almost a year ago, in worse condition then that one. Haggle from 2600 see if you can get it from him for around 2300, but it looks well worth 2600 but you'll never know until you inspect it and test drive it.

420a are awesome engines in the eclipse.

I found a 98 GS-T with 116k on it for 2900, but its a spyder and i dont want a convertable :( And i hear that GS-T has some common problem called a crank walk? Or something like that. So ive been trying to stay away from those, is it really that common of an issue?

not in the 98 99 models they changed the main bearing design and cleared up the crank walk issue so your safe with that :thumb: 2900 is a stealif you dont want the spyder come up to ohio and ill trade you for my gst and pay your fuel

Personally i wouldn't pay more than 1500 for the cleanest 420a car in existence.

I think you are being way too biased, and not everyone lives in a place like you with so many dsm's to choose from for those prices.

OP, i took a look at that eclipse and if the owner is not hiding anything from you it is way worth it for that price. I used to have a 96 N/A and it was the most reliable car i have owned, i wouldn't doubt it even once. Just make sure if you go look at it that you look closely at every detail, from engine to inside. Look at the coolant, check oil level before cranking it up and all that good stuff, good luck:thumb:

Didn't read the part where you said the guy sold it, too bad:toobad:...but anyways about that gst spyder, sounds like a good deal IMO, just please do make sure that if you go look at any DSM, turbo or NA, inspect it closely because unfortunately most have been owned by stupid people that didn't take care of them properly and that's why they have a reputation of being unreliable, especially the turbo ones

Thanks for all the tips guys, you are really making this a lot easier for me. How many miles would you consider to be "to many" when buying a used 420a-T or 4g63?

1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse That is the link for the GS-T, and it is a 97 not 98 =/

I would say that spyder with 116k miles is pretty good for its age, and looks in pretty decent shape, looks stock, just go take a look at it, check it out good and drive it, if you have any doubts check back to the forums and let us know...btw if you come across any 2g's with a 420a turbo, i would try to stay away from them, that's just my .02

I agree the 420a N/T are good motors as long as they are maintained properly. If you want to go fast just buy something with the 4g63 power plant in it.

exactly, if you want power go for one with the 46g3 in it (well maintained)
if you just like eclipses and don't care much for power 420a's are awesome cars that won't disappoint you:thumb:

Every gst I find around here under $3000 turned out to be smokin, oil burning steering wheel shakin pieces of crap.Although I did see a couple of female owned RS's and GS's that were in beautifull shape. One for $1800 123,000 and one for$2100 with 89,000 miles on it.Most factory turbo cars were beat on and most 420As were owned by women that had them taken care of by either the dealership or a decent mechanic.Around by me its hard to find a 2 gen factory turbo car that hasn't been raped and molested. There is a 98 GS-T spyder down the road for $3500.It just needs a new tie rod, some window switches, seats are torn, engine lights on,needs 1 o2 sensor, tires, and it smokes but ONLY when its running. The guy that owns it is a mechanic at the sunoco station. He was asking $4500,But he said he will let it go for $3500 as is!:beatentodeath:

Im not worry about power anymore. My vehicle now is a 94 S-10 4.3 liter v6. I have it dropped on 3 inch spindles and blocks. I also have flow master "dual exhaust" and 75 shot Venom nitrous wet kit. But it sucks gas down and im really over putting 25 bucks worth of gas in every few days. So my friend is buying it and thats how im gonna buy an eclipse. I dont need a fast one, i just want to slam it out and make it shine!

You have a lot to read about. Read about crank walk first. Theres 4g63t's (t is for turbo)
4g63's (non turbo) and 420a's. The 420 never came with a turbo.

So what ones have the 4g63 non turbo's? Thats what id prefer anyway.

You would have to go to Europe to get a 2g with a 4g63 non turbo. They didn't sell any in the states.

I had a 97 Esi Talon (non turbo of course) it was reliable to a point then it started having a bunch of issues all at once, I did drive that thing hard though, honestly surprised it lasted as long as it did.

FWIW I picked up my 96 tsi awd for 2500 with only 107k. There is deals out there just have to be patient.

i paid 2600 3 years ago for a 98 that was very clean, nice paint, and good engine. had 156k on it. i ran it til over 220k and made 6k off of it using it for work/personal use. sold it for 1350. IF you dont beat up on a 420a, it will last a very ong time. check the wiring near the egr pipe, major trouble spot for these cars. an arc there will pop fuses and leave u stranded.
