97 GS Idling problem

i have a 97 gs and when i start the car up, it wants to die. I have to keep reving it so it can stay on. Once i get going its fine but as soon as i get to a stop sign or light. Same problem starts, it wants to die in the first gear, i have to sit there in neutral keeping my car alive. Please help me.

When was the last time you had gotten a tune up. Same thing happened to me in me in my 1g. I had to change the idle and I had to change out the fuel filter as well as the pump. worked for me. Get back to me.

just put in a new water pump and timing belt. This morning i went in to turn it on and it wouldnt even crank over, i think the battery died AGAIN. could the problem be maybe i jumped timing

Thats very good you had change out the Water pump because that might be one of the major problems. If it was the battery you might need a new alternater, on top of that if it was battery, you would stall in an idle. If your battery dies alot means its no good and wont keep a very good charge. Change that one you have for an Interstate, Diehard or optima. battery wont jump the timing. Again you might have to change out the fuel filter.
When you shifting from 2nd to 3d does it have a hard time getting up and does it hesitate?

no bro, from 2nd to 3rd its fine. Its only when i start slowing down and get into first gear when the problems start. Im gonna see if i can get a new battery today and hope that was the problem but here is the major problem. Ever since this happened my brakes seem delayed, when press on the brake it takes to long to start braking.

change your spark plug and wire, thats what i did to fix my problem.

As for your breaks check out your Calipers to see if they are the right size and put on properly. Usually as well if your having lag time on your brakes check your pads too, Brakes have nothing to do with timing.Hang in there though.

Just start in 2nd gear
