2G 97 eclipse gsx turbo removal

Hi there guys. Sorry for this stupid question, I have looked all over the internet and cannot find any guides on how to remove the turbo out of my 1997 eclipse gsx.

Im taking it out to send it off to get rebuilt, wanted a guide so i dont mess anything up. Does anyone have a guide handy or can describe the steps? And also tell me if oil/coolant must be drained or if i can just plug the lines?

You don't have to drain the coolant, you can just unhook the hoses from the turbo and put a bolt in the hose to block it off. Other than that, remove the intake pipe, unbolt the down pipe, remove the o2 housing, unhook the oil supply and drain lines, unhook the wastegate hose than unbolt it from the manifold and remove it.

Ok cool thank you for the reply. Can I do what you mentioned above to the oil line as well or does oil need to be drained? Also, will I need to remove the o2 sensor to take off the o2 housing?

You won't need to drain the oil, the oil level is slightly lower than the oil line. You will need to remove the o2 sensor in order to get to the rear o2 housing bolts.

Just unplug the o2 and undo the 2 downpipe bolts and unbolt the o2 housing once its out thats how i do it everytime

So I unbolt the o2 housing when i take the turbo out? Wont need a o2 socket?

takeout the O2 sensor with a o2 socket. You dont need to unbolt the o2 housing from the turbo just to take out turbo.

I always unbolt the downpipe from the o2 housing because them bolts are easier to get to then the ones holding the o2 housing to the turbine housing and you can just unplug the o2 sensor from the harness and you wont need to remove the sensor from the housing

If your going to use the same o2 housing when you put the turbo back in you don't have to take out the o2 sensor.

I like to take the o2 sensor out before messing with it beforehand just so that it doesn't get broken. If you are sending the turbo in to be rebuilt than you are going to have to remove the o2 housing. I find it to be easier to remove the o2 housing with the turbo bolted to the engine because you don't have to hold the turbo in place while breaking the bolts loose. Trying to take the turbo off with the o2 sensor in the o2 housing and then trying to unbolt the o2 housing from the turbo with the o2 sensor on the housing is just asking to break the sensor.

Use some pb blast it will make removal of bolts and nuts easier.

I cannot get this damn turbo out. Sorry for bumping an old thread but figured it was better than making a new one. Here are the pics. I’m not very mechanically inclined and can’t figure this out.

Just read above your post. there is lots of info on how to remove it in just this thread alone. its a very simple job and even being inexperienced you'll find its super simply. it does appear that all that needs to be done is remove the four bolts that secure the turbo to the exhaust manifold and then the lines that go into the center section of the turbo charger and it should come right out

Alright thanks that’s what I thought but I’m having a hell of a time getting them off they are on good. I guess I’ll spray them with PB blaster and let them soak for a bit.

yea the manifold to turbo bolts generally are quite a pain the get out do to the high heat and cooling that they get. soak them in pb blaster for a good amount of time and a breaker bar might be your best friend for this job

Yeah soaked it in pb blaster and found a 6 foot long metal curtain rod and used that as a breaker bar because I can’t find my galvanized steel breaker bars that I made. So I got those 4 bolts out and then the pain in the ass began. I couldn’t get to the second bolt on the exhaust. So since we are scraping the GST I took a hack saw to the exhaust and cut it out. Not sure how I am supposed to get to that bolt maybe should have been a bit more patient when trying to get at it. Shows I have a lot to learn this small thing turned into a long task for me but it’s out. This car is almost ready for the scrap yard as soon as I get these damn gauges out of the car and maybe take off the wheels once I drop it off to scrap.

That second Bolt is one of those accessed from the bottom of the car. and even sometimes things get in the way like the wastegate vent . congrats on getting it out tho. wish you luck with the rest of your adventure.
