Hello all

Well, my car was sent to Barcelona for some fixes at an import car technician (finding a good technician for non european cars in Spain can be quite hard) and well.

He has two Eclipses right now, both being 96 GS. He states that both car do not have the same engine, the other one as a "Dodge engine" (I assume a 420A), and he states that mine has the old engine on Eclipses. I assume again, 4g63.

Is it possible? In models guide it is stated that 95-99 N/T are powered by 420A.

So, what's going on? My car VIN does match a 96 GS. Previous owner could have it swapped? My fab date is 95. (maybe it can help)

Thank you all

Solution
In Europe & everywhere else in the world, 2G RS/GSs came with the 4G63 (naturally aspirated), not the 420A. US is the only country that got the 420A in the 2G cars.
All you have to do is look at some pics of the valve cover off of a 4g63, then compare it to your valve cover on a 96 gs. I really doubt the gs has a 4g63 in it. Also, is the 4g63 turbo? Just look up some pics and then look under the hood it should be really simple to find out.

A GS will have a 4g63

An RS will have a 420a

Notice how he said it's a 2gnt. They will always have the 420a motor.

Although, someone told me that the euro spec and jspec cars came with a 4g63 in the n/a as well.

hmm, sounds odd.

A 95 (2g) GS has a non-turbo (n/t) 4g63, so that means a 2g n/t doesn't have to have a 420a.

What? No...you're incorrect. ALL 2G NON-TURBOS have a 420a. 90-94 were the only years the non-turbo version of the 4g63 was available. :thumb:

Ok, so what's the difference between a 2g GS and a 2g RS?

All US 2GNT had the 420A NT engine. Except the Spyder, which had a 2.4L, at least in the later years. I can't see a reason to swap out the 420A for a 4g63 NT, pretty much the same power:confused:

RS is the base model, GS is the second up. Standard features and options are the main difference. Different wheels, side skirts on the GS, foglights.

RS' didn't have the option for cruise control either. Also the 97-99 GS/RS, the GS had the option for the turbo spoiler, the RS did not.

The differences between the RS and GS can be summed up with...
GS - power everything
RS - power nothing

420A has slightly more HP than a 4g63 n/t...5 to be exact. The only reason someone would do that is for a turbo project down the road I would assume..

They were built in the US. All DSMs were built in the US, then exported to other countries. I believe real reason the 420A was put into the US engines was to get a larger percentage of domestic content in the US. This wasn't a problem overseas, where the cars didn't need such a requirement.

My car is from the usa...

I bought my car recently in Upton, massachussets... cover of the engine was red. Does this help? (I suppose not...)

Cas ir GS, not GST as someone asked. Not turbo or anything strange.

Is there any way to be sure what engine does my car have?
Position of battery, air filter, fluids..... any thing?

I need a new gearbox (primary shaft damaged, and the case has got a nice hole larger than 6 cm) and well.... I think that engine cares, or not?

Is the same transmision on both 4g63 and 420A or not?

I repeat that my car is not european, it is 100% american despite of living in europe, I hate european cars..

Trannies are diff because it's two different types of engines and hell even two diff manfacturers that made them.

Is there a way to check? You're obivously not reading what everyone has told you. Physically OPEN your hood and look at the top of your engine and describe the valve cover (where the spark plugs go).

Does it say 16valve DOHC?
Does it say 2.0L DOHC?

Just look at the pics I posted. The top one is a 4g63 and the bottom is a 420a. Just look at the shape of the valve cover. It couldn't be any simpler.

sent the pics to the repair shop.... I don't have the car with me.... Snif :(
car is 500miles far away from me

The pic of the 4g63 is modded, so it's not going to look exactly like that. Just tell them to look at the shape of the valve cover.

I thought i read in another post on here that the stock NA 4g63 in the euro 2g's had like 160 hp or something like that.

Is that a pic in your sig of your car? If it is, its' a US spec. You don't have side indicators. I have a Eurospec, we got more revs, a different final drive, more top speed and slightly more hp.

Are those the wheels the car came with, if yes, it's a US spec, the Euro had ugly stock alloys, perfect alloys for winter LOL

aha..I know how to help you!

Did your car have a Oil Pressure gauge in it? If not, then its a US NT with 420A

I can asure you it is a US specs......
I still have the title clear in Massachussets state!!
I bought it at a local dealer of Upton... so.... IT IS 100% american, not the crap they sell in Europe (the EURO eclipse has even a different horsepower)

Of course it is my car! Would be a shame to post other's cars in my sig :D

Btw, a good site for 3000GT owners?
