1995 eagle talon tsi awd automatic

i just rebuilt the engine and put it in a couple weeks ago but im having a couple of issues

#1. it will not go into gear?

the fluid is right on the line on the dipstick and the linkage cable seems to be in the right place. when i blew the engine it was leaking tranny fluid on the ground? but it does not leak now?

#2. it wont idle right i bumped the cruise control and throttle cable thing when putting the engine in but it seems to be fine?

if any one can help please do ive been working on this car for a couple months now and it seems like every time i fix something another thing breaks :ohdamn:

Is the torque converter installed properly and can you move the stick shift from park and drive and what not if its just not going in to second, third...ect if this is the case it is the torque converter take the trans back off and try to properly install the torque convert if you are still having the problem replace the torque converter.

how to install the torque converter
step 1 place the torque converter in transmission and spin in around and gently push on it until it falls in to place continue to do this for a min or 2 to make sure its all the way seated.
step 2 half way bolt the trans on the motor and bolt the torque converter to the flex plate
step 3 torque the bolts from the trans to the motor.
step 4 start car while the car the car is on jack stands (4) one at each tire so the car is completely off the ground put the car into drive and slowly accelerate to get the car to shift pay attention to your RPMs if the car does not shift replace the torque converter.

As for idle check timing and spark plugs and wires and all that.

im pretty sure the torque convertor is fine i put the trany on before i put the engine in and had the problem of it not being fully seated and took it back off and fixed it....

i noticed that the anti lock break light is on? i remember seeing in one of the forums that that could cause limp mode what would i check to see if its somthing to do with the light?

could some one please give me a detailed diagram of how to adjust the idle cruise control, my haynes manual doesnt explain it it says to go to a licened dealer but i dont have the cash and according to my haynes the idle can effect the tranny.

if you tightened down the motor and tranny with the convertor not being properly seat you could have "stuffed the pump" meaning an internal crack that will cause you to have no line pressure and no gear engagement. hook uo a gauge inline with the tranny line and see if you have line pressure

It should have about 7 quarts in it, how many did you put in ?...You could take the the fluid line off and see if the fluid is pumping out at a steady rate. ....Is the linkage cable from the shifter to the gear selector hooked up and tightened ?.Limp mode is 3rd gear and reverse, you have no gears..The brake light has nothing to do with limp mode

i only put in 3 quarts in ..i forgot to drain the tranny when i pulled the engine and alot spilled out...when i filled it up the car was not running?

yes the linkage cable is hooked up and tighted
when i put the engine in i took the bracket the linkage cable conects to off as well but it seemed like it only went back on 1 way.
as for the cable at first it was pulling me out of low and into second then i looked in my book and did the procedure for adjusting the cable and fixed that but still it wont go into gear the braket the cable bolts to has about a inch of room to were the bolt tightens could that be off still?? the book says to push out the slack but when i push to hard it gos from nuetral to 2nd

could it be the fluid level and my dipstick is wrong some how? ### i really think more then 3 quarts drained out

It sounds like your low on fluid..The only way to get an accurate level reading is with the car warmed up, in neutral, running, and on a flat surface ( not a steep driveway )..

ive checked it with the engine warm and its level in my garage

i still need to figure out my idle before i can mess with the shifting problem

if the torque convertor was bad wouldnt it still move just feel like its in a high gear?

i was told to pull one of the two lines going to the trany and see if fluid pumped out i dont know what one im supposed to pull or if it matters but i pulled one and there was no fluid pumping out////i cant get to the other one to see but if it matters i will?

Im surprise noone clearly stated this:
the torque converter must be pushed into the transmissions and turned 3 until it is all the way in. If bolted the torque converter to the flywheel and then put it in the transmission you broke the front pump when you bolted the transmission together. This will not cause fluid to more at all and it will not allow the car to move in anygear. This is a very common mistake.

is there a way to check it to see with out just replacing it and hoping for the best??

i started pulling the engine last night and be done this afternoon is there anything i should check besides just the torque converter while the engine and trans is out?

i removed the torque converter and when i shake it side to side it sounds like some thing is moving back and fourth and has about a half in play?? is that normal?

i removed the torque converter and when i shake it sided to side i can hear something moving around with about an inch of slack?? so is it bad??

I dont know, but if you bolted the torque convert to the flywheel then put the transmission on the torque converter, then you broke the front pump. It has to be lined up. if its hard to bolt up it will pop a few times when you bolt it up because its breaking the teeth off the pump

i got a new torque converter and still nothing
i then realized my neutral safety switch was broken on install of the engine i just replaced it today and still nothing it will not engage any gears
there is a clicking buzzing sounds coming from the lower half of the tranny??
any ideas???

I could of told you that it probably wasn't the converter. You most likely damaged the pump in the transmission . IT isn't anything electronic. You can unhook every single electrical plug on the transmission and it will still go in gear, it will just not shift thru the gears. It is also possible that you are low on fluid. How many quarts did you put back in with the new converter. It should take at least 3-5 in the converter. If there isn't enough fluid in the transmission it will never go into gear because the clutch packs are locked by hydraulic pressure.

fluid levels are fine and i put about 3 maybe 4 in the torque converter ......i jacked the car up and when i put my ear to the tranny pan i can here the sound?? were is this tranny pump at? can i replace it? is it expensive?

Can you shift the vehicle into any gear with the key on and car not running? If not then it is going to be a mechanical problem not a sensor or pump issued. You should be able to turn the key on, push the brake pedal and hear the shift interlock release in the center console so you have move the car out of park. The easiest thing to do is unhook the linkage from the transmission and see if you can move it that way. If not then it is unrelated to the transmission. With the linkage unhooked also try to manually move the transmission through the gears. Should move easily.

I can't stand these guys but this is how to install one.

How To Install a Torque Converter on an Automatic Transmission - YouTube

Like said above, I bet you stuffed the pump.

is this pump located in the transmission or the torque converter?

my speakers are broken so i couldn't hear the video but it looked just like i did it both times.

i put the car on jack stands removed the linkage cable and shifted it by hand and nothing happened.....from what I read in my other post every one is saying its my internal transmission pump? but i cant find any were to buy one? or if there even is one i have searched and searched

If your looking for a pump just go to a local tranny shop. They should be able to order one for you. If the tranny is out I would suggest having the tranny shop go through it before you reinstall it.. this way if there's anything else that needs addressing it can be taken care of at that time.
