I'm 17 and will be getting a 95-99 gsx by this summer I hear they're high maintenence cars that break often? I learned how to drive manuel on a maxima a year or two ago but I'm afraid if I get a manuel it will need more repairs more often then a automatic, can anyone give me advice what to do? When I get it I was thinking of getting a greddy or hks exhaust I'm also brand new to this site sorry if this thread isn't good or will get deleted, I'm just trying to find someone to give me advice on a car they really know cause idk anyone who knows about eclipse gsx's after I get the car checked what are the first mods I should put?

Hey use that search button up there.. It will answer all the questions you need to know. I see you just registered... Look into the tech articles and upgrade paths and start to learn more about these cars.. Maint. is everything our cars and should be on other cars as well..

im gonna go ahead and say get the car and learn how to drive it first. before you start modding.

For sure. They are good cars if you DON'T run them to heck. I have had 2 DSMs (93 Eclipse GS and my 97 Talon ESi) and in the process of getting my 95 TSi. (I'm only 17 as well)

I do got to say, they drive WAY different than any 5 speed car I have driven. I don't know what it is, but they are different.

I say, get the GSX, i bet you wont be disappointed, just learn the basics and always remember....

Maintenance BEFORE Mods!!

Good luck and have fun!!:hellyeah:

LOL this reminds me of some good times, i got my first gsx when i was fifteen. Out of experience the best advice i can give you is do it once and do it right!! Do not go the cheap way and cut conrners because 9 times out of 10 it will not go the way you want. Of course maintenance!!

Talking about first mods should be:

1 Aftermarket boost gauge
2 Bigger exhaust (2.5-3inch)
3 boost controller.

and later: you will decide your goals and will be trying to reach it by adding more parts ;)

Maybe a 1G BOV if its the crappy stock one? BOVs are very simple mod to install.

But definitely the Aftermarket Boost Gauge

Yeah I had a 90s maxima and a 86-89 supra I sold that I prob should have kept =\ anyway I was reading about double clutching and what's the diff between double clutch downshifting and regular downshifting and how does the turbo on the gsx work like how many psi's and is like 20 psi the same thing as "20 pounds of boost"?

i just named 3 out of a 100+ mods ( :p) ,that needs to be done 1st. bov has to be the 4th mod, because after he will get the exhaust, boost gauge and boost controller, then he will be ready to turn the boost up to 1-3PSI. After that, the stock bov will start leak.....

get the car and do all the regular maintenance, the first reason our cars break down is because of poor car care. And if your going to mod your car do it right the first time, do not go cheap. GL

double clutch is a ricer term, if im not wrong. And yes when referring to lbs of boost is the same as psi of boost. your gsx on the stock t25 (if your buy a 2g) will not hit 20psi. I think max on the t25 is 15-16. Yes you could set you BC to 20psi but your just pushing hot air. If your going to upgrade you turbo on a budget get a 14b from a 1g. Or if you have the money to spare go ahead and get a 16g and get supporting mods. But please first learn the car and how it acts. I do not want to see another horror story about a dsm. GL and have fun

Believe me not to scare you, and i love dsms. But if your not handy id say don't buy a turbo dsm if your not ready. Basically their mostly used up and abused so most likely you will be receiving one that needs work for sure.

Take your time when you search, don't pick up the first one you look at and remember their will be downtime, especially if you start to mod them. You being 17, nothing against you will neglect the car. These cars are getting up there in age and they need a lot of attention from their owners.

I couldn't have said it better. But please if you do think your ready, go ahead and take a chance. These cars are amazing, LOL if you can keep them running jk.

All cars break because they are neglected or abused. Most often you will hear about the DSM going down is because people push the vehicle to the extreme driving like a race car when it's not ready to be driven like that. Also some parts from factory can't withstand some of the HP limits people throw on them.

Manual drive is more or less the same on any other manual drive car with some exceptions. Nothing is different between the DSM and the Maxima. Why do you feel you will need more repairs? Both are moving parts that wear out.

Well, the exhaust is all up to you, but each exhaust is different too. Some prefer sound, performance or price and it's ultimatly up to you. Follow the upgrade path and SEARCH. Much information and much to learn on this site. Maintence is always first before any upgrading unless the part being replaced/repaired can be upgraded without causing complications or possible problems.

Double clutching is what was done on old transmissions and deisel engines when transmissions didn't have syncrod gears to allow easy shifting. You may be thinking of "rev matching" which when you downshift, you raise the rpms to the appropiate rpm speed to match the lower gear. That is more commen pratice and prolongs the life of the transmission.

The stock T-25 hooked up to the stock BCS only boosts around 12psi, but can be raised to 16psi before it become unefficent which blows hot air and over works the turbo. PSI = Pounds per Square Inch and is the same as "pounds of boost". All boost gauges are going to read psi or bar. 1 bar = 14.5038psi

read read read and some more LOL. i am 19 and own a 97 gsx i am building but i have some buddys that built DSM's before so i have some help but from just driving mine they are nice cars. my gsx has 151k miles so ALOT but its clean tittle and was deff maintained i couldnt find anything wrong with it hell heat sheild had never even been removed so i didnt mind the millage sence car was unmolested witch is rare for a gsx

Ok,so...

1. So rev matching you match the revs to hen you downshift the engine doesent rev?

2. Yeah Im deff. Not gunna beat my car, it's gunna be my first official licensed car and I'm gunna take care of it.

3. So the stock t-25 pushes around 12 psi? Isn't the point of a boost controller to raise the boost/tune it to what's best? So there's basically no more psi to add if it's just gunna blow hot air?

4. Does anyone know the normal life of a gsx clutch?

5. I got a car magazine I was reading they had a whole like four page article on blow off valves and it talked about like redirection valves there called something like that instead of releasing it into the atmosphere it puts it into the intake or something, then they showed one that released air into the atmosphere and into the intake, I'm prob gunna get that one..

Yeah your lucky to have those friends, I found on craigslist if you look under nyc eclipse gsx there's a 97 under 90k miles "lots of mods" for 4k but it's an automatic and I wanna have a manuel cause I'm a kid and I wanna have fun :D , the only kids I know who have mitsubishis are two kids getting 3000gt's what do you think 95-99 gsx vs 3000gt? (non vr4)

There's no comparison. The 3000GT will possibly be even more maintenance heavy - they're ridiculously heavy and sluggish... The GSX will blow the doors off a non-vr4 3000gt

Dude im 17 and I didnt know what i was getting into. So far ive had some bad luck with my tsi. Just be carefull. They hogg your time and money. Be ready to spend alot of time with her and spending alot of money. Kinda like a GF. haha
And respect the speed man. You HAVE TO BE SMART WITH THE GAS PEDAL. Trust me. I learned my lesson.

typically the average life span of a clutch is around 80k miles... but since its a gsx.. i can safely assume it was launched a few times so depending on how many miles are on it when you buy it you could need one soonish... but it all depends on how the car drives and how the clutch engages.. you'll know by feel
oh and when doing maintenance remember oem over pep boys or autozone.. these cars are very delicate and "picky" in a sense. just do some reasearch on the site and see what other people are doing for mods. Good Luck!! :thumb:

this is not what you are going to want to hear, but get it serviced, make sure everything is in good working order, put an intake on it so it can breathe, and leave it the he** alone. trust me, at 17 the tickets cost you more money than that 30 seconds of fun is worth. start saving money, do a whole bunch of research, make a goal, save some money, buy parts over the next year or 2, buy a POS daily for $300 that barely runs to drive while you spend a year building it RIGHT. and by the time you're 19-21 you will have a nice fast car that you can drive and not get in near as much trouble....
now that the angel has spoken, big intake, cut the muffler off, shim the wastegate, make a boost controller, turn it up to 18 and dont let off the gas. you'll loose your license for a year, but hey! james dean has been dead a long time, and he's still cool.
good luck!

And to actually answer your main question.

First thing you should do, get it all checked out - i'd change ALL fluids including transmission/transfer case/oil.

Get the timing belt change unless you have PROOF it was done within 20k miles or so - thats my little golden rule - unless someone has proof it was changed within 20k I'd change it.

For first mod's:

Intake
3" Exhaust
Boost Gauge
MBC
FMIC(Don't need too but it's nice to have and looks nice on 2g's)

I'd advise just keeping it around there until you turn 18... trust me them pre-18 tickets are not fun. Even then, my first ticket was when I was 19 and I about lost my license for a year for it. I drive like a grandma now..... most of the time :sneaky:

You need to start doing research and lots of it. What you asked and how you asked makes it seem, like you have little knowledge in how our cars(and others) work. Please do yourself a favor and start reading through the threads, im not trying to insult you but you will learn a lot by reading through them. Of course if you are completely lost then just ask, many of us are very welcome to answer your questions.

I'm 17 and have a 98 tsi awd 5 speed. Definatly get maintinence done before you mod. I thought the same thing before i got the car, but now i know what i have to do before i'm going to mod it. Also, you may say your not going to beat on it, but theres those times from a stop sign out in the middle of nowhere that you just can't help it. And it shouldn't matter whos car you can and cant beat, your 17 and don't need to be racing everybody in your school.

What kinds exhaust should I get, hks high power, turbo back exhaust or high flow catback? And does anyone have a recomendation for an intake?
