I'm 17 and will be getting a 95-99 gsx by this summer I hear they're high maintenence cars that break often? I learned how to drive manuel on a maxima a year or two ago but I'm afraid if I get a manuel it will need more repairs more often then a automatic, can anyone give me advice what to do? When I get it I was thinking of getting a greddy or hks exhaust I'm also brand new to this site sorry if this thread isn't good or will get deleted, I'm just trying to find someone to give me advice on a car they really know cause idk anyone who knows about eclipse gsx's after I get the car checked what are the first mods I should put?

Get the car first. You're getting wwwwwwaaaayyyyyyyyy ahead of yourself.

Your car may not be 100% stock when you get it. Just take this one step at a time. The order of mods and maintenance will be dependent on what's been done to the car already.

And do it right the first time. Look for a good condition Tsi AWD or GSX.

And IF you get a dsm and you DO the maintinence it needs, then you can think about upgrades. It doesn't pay to buy performance parts if your car won't perform. Also for some simple parts such as an intake or exhaust, ebay can be your friend if you don't have big bucks to spend on brands such as greddy or hks or apex'i. But like the rest of the posts and I have said, maintinence first.

Well a straight 3 inch turbo back exhaust system would be the best option for you. All a high flow cat would do is keep it emissions legal. One thing you would have to worry about is the noise level though. A cat-back system would be all you would really need for a very lightly modded car and after a while you could upgrade your downpipe to complete your turbo back system. As far as an intake goes any metal pipe with a good filter on the end is all you need, brand shouldnt make much difference with that.

Why is a turboback better? And what is it exactly? If u dnt wannaanswer I'll look it up but just asking and what's noisy the cat or the turbo ? And it's not a ricy noisy rite?

A turbo back is straight pipe from the turbo back with no catalytic converter, pretty self explanatory, a cat back has a catalytic converter. also an exhaust is hard to f*ck up so i would just go with ebay cause its just pipe, you aren't really gonna get to much more from a name brand. im also 17 and have had my dsm for about a year now.. its ultimately up to you but just do some research before you just go buy a dsm. i would make sure you have a place to work on it and have another car if you are planning on modding it. once you start its pretty hard to stop and it may or may not end up sitting in a garage for awhile. They are alot of fun if it is what you are into but just have patience. GL.

As for the noise, most aftermarket exhausts will make your car louder. Depending on your area, you might get hassled by cops for the louder exhaust. Many officers that I have met seem to dislike our "imports", and they will pull you over for anything. An aftermarket exhaust is an easy one to pull you over for. The actual sound of the exhaust depends on who makes it.

So is a turbo back better cause it has no cat back? And yeah I have a big garage I don't know much about ring a mechanic I'm trying to go to a trade to school to learn and yeah I'm not trying to make it a super fast car just a little quick and sound / look nice

A turbo-back exhaust system will replace everything in the exhaust piping from the o2 housing back( it will replace the 02 housing if you get an o2 eliminating downpipe). And a catback system replaces all the piping from the catalytic converter back.

I found on craigslist if you look under nyc eclipse gsx there's a 97 under 90k miles "lots of mods" for 4k but it's an automatic and I wanna have a manuel cause I'm a kid and I wanna have fun , the only kids I know who have mitsubishis are two kids getting 3000gt's what do you think 95-99 gsx vs 3000gt? (non vr4)

i hope youre not talking about the silver one.(im in the tri state area and like to see whats on cl). and i dont think you should be worrying about races right now

FOR THE 3RD TIME IM NOT GOING TO RACE!!!!!! I'm 17 I'm gunna be responsible at least till I turn 18 I've already crashed a car (1997 subaru legacy gt) which I'm gunna try n sell before I buy my gsx only damage is paint and needs a new headlight all the major dents were pulled and I don't like any of the gsx's on cl now there was a five speed for 4k neg. But not anymore I don't like any gsx's tht r on cl now

I don't know a lot about cars, just a little that's why I'm trying to go to a mechanics school. & can anyone tell me if you have to remove the tranny to replace the clutch in a gsx? My dad wants me to get an automatic but I'm telling hi I wanna five speed n he's telling me to replace the clutch u gotta remove tranny.

A "cat-back" exhaust replaces all the piping after the cat. A true "turbo-back" system replaces all the exhaust piping from the turbo back (get it?) including the O2 sensor housing which is a small bent section of pipe that houses the first O2 sensor. A "turbo-back" is not so much different as it is more. A "turbo-back" system includes everything a cat-back does along with a downpipe (and O2 sensor housing to be a true "turbo-back"). The cat is located between the downpipe and the section of the exhaust usually referred to as the "cat-back." Most after-market downpipes for these cars eliminate the cat by just being a longer pipe that bolts directly to the cat-back.

I hope that helps with your confusion over the exhaust. Now, not to beat a dead horse, but you need to just search for answers to these basic questions. You are far away from worrying about what to buy for a car you don't even have yet. It is okay to want to learn though, which is why you should search around this forum and the rest of the web. People on here won't just answer every easy question on one thread when they've all been answered 100 times before.

Anyway good luck finding a DSM, they are really fun cars.

Alright, thanks a lot for answing my questions everyone.Last question, I want a five speed but my dad wants me to get an auto is there a big difference in performence? And like I said about the clutch^ IS that true? I also prefer manuel case isntt it less costly if you don't beat on your car like speed racer?

This is a little late, but doubleclutching is not a ricer term. If im correct is an old term from back in the day when transmissions didnt have syncros. So you would have to rev the engine inbetween gears to speed up the gears for the next shift up. Its not necisary on newer cars because of the syncros in the transmission. But rev matching on down shfts can be benificial. ( thats reving the engine up a little to match the rpm with vehichle speed on down shifts). With both practice makes perfect.

You gotta do your homework on these dsms. Do the maintenance first. Such as belts, hoses, battery, and your lubricants. If any part has failed or is getting ready to fail, you always have the options of oem versus aftermarket. But thye main thing is get the car up the specs, learn all about the basic stuff, and learn how to drive it. It will NOT happen overnight. The proven members can vouch for me on that. Once you learn all of this, then you can start asking and worrying about upgrades.

I got my most recent gsx about 9 months ago and my rule of thumb upon delivery is to do seals, timeing belt, waterpump, serpentine, clutch (albeit I ended up after market with a lightened flywheel) and clutch fork and fulcrum ball. Most you'll want to do early because you won't know what shape they are really in. But basically as everyone has said maintenance before mods.
