91 tsi AWD, good buy?

hey guys, i ran into a guy who is trying to sell a 91 talon tsi awd for $2000, he says it wont come out of 1st gear, he thinks it a shift linkege, i think it is too, i have a parts car(90 talon n/t) would that part work on the tsi? and i have never messed with shifter linkeges before, would it be hard to replace? the tsi has 125K on it and he says it has a big 16g turbo,boost controller,k&n filter,cat back exaust, and a BOV. sound like a good buy for $2000? i think so but i havent owned a turbo model yet and i really want a tsi awd, those n/t just dont cut it. :thumbdown

Ok, lets start here...
See if you can go to look at the car. Pop the hood and look at the linkage on the trans. If you are not familiar, pass side right below the pipe and BOV behind the air filter. I would submit that if the cables were the problem or the linkage, you should be ble to move the e\levers manually and get it in neutral. If you cannot, you will probably need trans work or trans. If the car is in good shape outside that issue, (rust, interior, wheels, tires, fluids) it might be a good deal. If you can get a tranny quick and cheap enough you could make out ok. My biggest concern would be the fact that a test drive would be impossible due to the NO SHIFT problem. If you can varify that the cable is whats wrong, I'd make a deal pending he replace the cable and let you drive the car. If not, I may suggest that you low ball the deal with the "it will probably need a tranny and how do I know it's drivable anyway" clause.

I wouldn't buy something that can't be driven for 2k. Unless your a big fan of tranny work.

i talked to him and checked out the car he started it up for me, runs great and sounds mean! he seemed not to know too much about cars in general so he waent much help as to finding out the exact problim but can n/t shift linkiges be used on a awd turbo?
