hey guys im thinking of perhaps trying out a dsm again i found locally a 90
plymouth laser rs turbo fwd 5spd.. anyways car has 164k bodys decent little rust
old man says that the transmission is stuck in 3rd gear so im guessing it needs a new tranny but my question is that its been sitting for about 4 years and old man claims it runs good is there anything i would want to redo on the motor before i would drive it for a daily? like gaskets or whatnot? besides a tranny its in good shape and the price is only 600$ is it worth it?

I would buy it for sure at 600 you cant go wrong. I would do the basics like change oil, flush radiator, drain gas, replace all filters. After that I would start it let run in the driveway for a little bit checking for any leaks around valve cover, radiator hoses and etc. If none drive locally around for a few days making sure everything is cool. Oh dont forget oil and coolant lines to turbo check for sure. A tune up would be the next thing.

Rust and transmission problems, and been sitting. I'd offer like 300 bucks at the very most. Fwd cars are all over the place

yeah its not bad just paint fade and one rust spot on the rocker but im also looking at a 91 talon with the non turbo 4g63 its a 5spd as well problem with that is that it will run rough and die but it has a new motor and tranny with 30k and that car is 250 what do you think could be the problem with that?

bump

i was thinking about that and im gonna fire it up and see if it runs from sitting for so long , but instead i might go with the talon i was talking about , previously stated owner says that once it starts it runs rough then dies i was told it could be timing or a mass airflow sensor?

Stuck in 3rd gear..if you can free it up, put the front end on jacks, drain the fluid, but two qts of ATF in it, start it up and row through the gears so the ATF can help loosen things up and clean while you're at it for 20 min.

Then, drain the ATF out and drop in 2.2 qts of Redline MT-90 in its place...

Good luck with it. I Paid 1200 for mine and been a sweet ride. Kinda curious on one thing and that is when it was built: mounted low on the driver's "C" pillar is the manufacturer's sticker showing month and year on the upper right corner of the sticker and on the left lower corner is the "MDH" should month, day and hour the vehicle left the Normal, Il factory.

would that honestly free it up? i understand that the shift fork is bent and its not too hard to fix how does it exactly free it up?

If the fork is bent, then it's a tranny overhaul.

But, it then sounds like the bent fork which won't allow the syncro set to slide back to its rested position.

Yet, I've seen jammed trannies where the syncro set has jammed itself in the gears where a simple good push back and forth will relieve the pressure off of the syncro set and release it from being jammed with it being in gear..

Go find you a F5M33 tranny, or drop this one and have it taken in for overhaul.

Good luck-DSM
