hey guys my 90 Gst all of a sudden won't go into 2nd 3rd or reverse, i've read other threads similar to the problem im having and someone said that the shifter arm needs adjustment..? can anyone elaborate on how i do this exactly, the transmission was recently rebuilt by RRE and does not feel like syncs or tranny is busted, the shifter does not stay in place at all when i try to put it in 2nd, 3rd, or reverse, but 1st 3rd and 5th feel normal, all help appreciated, thanks

Before you even start, make sure that the clips on the shifter cables are on. I am no guru, but ones one of the clips went out and didn't have 1-3-5 gears /not sure/. Might have been like yours missing 2-4-reverse. Looked under the hood put another clip, that is it. No more problems.

Its not the transmissions fault. Try adjusting the brackets that the cables are bolted to on top of the transmission. Loosen up the bolts, move the bracket back and forth, and tighten the bolts down. Try a few different positions, the smallest change of the cables will change the shifting drastically. I'll assume that those gears worked fine before this new trans, so I wouldnt mess with the cable adjustments just yet.

well i checked the cables and the retaining clip on the top of the transmission and found that boot on the shifter cable before the retaining clip tore, so now the adjustment bolt is popping out of place, for now i've zipped tied the end of the bolt and it is holding in place and I have all gears back like before, will relplacing the torn boot fix this or do i still need to adjust the cable?

If the cable is popping out of the plastic casing, it will give you shifting problems. You may have damaged a shift cable. You can usually feel it in the shifter if the cable is bending.

it was popping out of the casing, but its holding right now with the zip tie, when it was out though i could see the cable bending when i tried to shift it in 2nd, 4th, or reverse. If it does pop out again will i have the replace the cable or is there any other way to fix it..?
