So long story short, I needed valve guids, valve seals, and valve springs. So i removed the head on my car and ordered all the parts needed and took the head to the shop. And the day i recieved the head i put it back togetherand it ran good. I did not mess with shifting linkage or trans at all. So once i got it started i started the break in well while i was drivn it out of my parking spot about ten min went by i was at a gas station. As i pull out of the gas station and get ready to shift to second and bam wont go into second gear, so i went to third went to shift to fourth and wouldn go into fourth gear either, so im thnking what the hel?l So i pull into a neighbor hood and pull over to check it out nothng looks unusual.l so i pulled the center console to see if the linkage was catchng anything in their but nothing, every thing was all good. I than went and checked the linkage in the engine bay and all was good their too. so i get home and pull my linkage cable off and see if it may be the linkage cables, well when i pulled them off the little pins on the tranny i could shift the shifter and the linkage obviously wasnt getting caught on anything.I than go to shift the transmission by hand an whatta you know i cant go into 2nd 4rth or reverse only 1st 3rd and 5th. any ideas what too look for what to try? im gettin ready to pull trans and pull it apart. thanks in advance.

For the love of God, please form complete sentences with punctuation and spelling. Rule #5. I cannot even focus while reading your thread it is so bad. Re-write your paragraph as a proper paragraph.

Your problem is shifter cable retainer spring clips on the transmission, or a damaged shifter cable itself.

It's been Re wrote. Sorry i was in a hurry and frusturated and just wanted to get the idea out their. How would it be linkage/cables? I ask that because i took off the linkage off the cast iron piece that they connect to and i still could not shift it at the transmission by hand with no linkage connected.

you are talking about this, correct? http://www.extremepsi.com/store/images/T/MB367526-S.jpg

Yes, I am talking about those. If those are intact, and the shift lever on the transmission cannot physically go into 2nd/4th/reverse on the transmission (all of those are shifts moving the shift lever on the transmission towards the front of the vehicle while 1st/3rd/5th are shifts towards the firewall, and it is physically jamming you from not entering any of these then it could be something internal in the transmission.

I still have my money on damaged shifter cables or the shift cable clips not being properly installed.

It could also be something simple like your shifter linkage hitting the hard intercooler pipe. I know mine does that sometimes when I try to put it in reverse, so I had to ziptie my intercooler pipe to pull it closer to the radiator. Like I said, its a simple thing to check and it definitely couldn't hurt to look.

As well, some peoples configurations cause an issue with the lower radiator hose when the 6-bolt swap is done in a 2g. Check and make sure nothing is hitting the counterweight.

LOL, did you guys not read the part where i took the linkage OFF the car and cannot shift it manually on the transmission? and the clips were never tooken off but yeah ill be replacin them.

Well, if it randomly went from working, to not working, what did you change in the setup? Why don't you look there first.

So you deduced that it isn't shift cables by disconnecting them. By manually shifting the transmission and not getting 2nd/4th/Rev, AND your shifter counterweight is not hitting anything, then it is internal. Either something broke and jammed itself under the reverse idler gear lever, or jammed itself between the 5th gear cover and the shift rail ends. Personally, it is rare for either of those things to magically happen, so confirm your shifter counterweight is not hitting anything. If that is confirmed, then pull the transmission.

Either way, your description leaves alot for us to simply guess, and you will only find your answer by physically checking things yourself.

right, didnt make any adjusments to shift cables. and the shiftng counter wait is not hittng anything else. I was told i may have a broken shift rail.

You don't have a broken rail, 2nd and 4th are on different rails. You more than likely are just hitting something with the linkage as said before. 2nd and 4th both put the linkage in a similar place so i would look there.

transmission is out, and can not shift into those gears on the transmisson so quit saying linkage ive said at least twice that its not that cause it was disconected.

Well i've got the internal diagram of the transmission build into my brain, so i can tell you that nothing inside the transmission will really effect both 2nd and 4th gear unless as stated before, something is in the end case of the transmission jamming the rails from pushing thru and in that case reverse won't work either. because the 5th shift fork will be jammed also. If 1st, 3rd and 5th work fine than there is no problem with the rails, forks or shift selector shaft assembly.

Check shifter base bushings! If thats not it, the shift cable could be culprit. Last resort maybe the pressure plate is broken! Sheptrans.com for rebuild.

Well, then pull the transmission apart. What do you want, your hand held?

We gave you a list of things to check, as well as what the issue could be internally.

There are numerous tutorials on how to disassemble the transmission and figure out what failed causing all the shift rails to be binding in an upward position. You probably broke something and it is jamming the shift selector, the shift rail ends by the 5th gear cover, or by the reverse idler gear lever.

ok cool i'll start pulling apart tomorrow and let you guys know and post pics. sorry i was just gettin irritated about the shift linkage LOL.

can anyone show me some good disassembly videos i cant seem to find any decent ones on youtube. thanks all
