Hey all, I went browsing through the slavage yard today and managed to pick up some parts I need, as well as some I don't, but might want to use. I pulled a stock external oil cooler from a '90 Laser RS. It looked fine, and for $10.00, I figured it's a good find if usable, if not, was only $10. I was talking to a frined about it and he mentioned looking for metal shavings and such, which I didn't think about. How can I go about inspecting the cooler beyond the obvious visual checks?

You could fill it, make sure it doesnt leak when there is no pressure..That would help narrow it down if its gonna be good or not..

Just like a used radiator..Make sure it dont leak when there is no pressure. You have a good idea if it's legit.

Metal shavings should have went into the oil filter.

But you could again fill it, shake it up good, and let gravity make the metal shavings come out of the in or out line...Then the oil filter should trap most of the shavings..If there even is any, you dont know, that car could have started..

I'm probably stating the obvious here but if you want to use that oil cooler you will also need to get the oil filter housing to go with it. If the cooler was only $10 I would probably go back and get the filter housing off the same car.
