I know it might sound crazy, but gas prices in California is crazy, it is $3.33 just today (8/31/05) and it is still raising.

I don't know if it has been done before, I'd done searches and FAQ's, no information, so here goes...

What if we keep our wastegate open at all time? then is it possible to run 87 octane since no boost is created?

If the answer is yes above, how can I modify my wastegate actuator or wastegate actuator arm or wastegate flap to open?

Thanks for listening guys, criticism accepted :D.

alright. Gas prices here in pa are just getting bad as of yesterday. 93 is 2.99. Well I just filled up today and here is a tip i learned. I don't care what anyone says, it works.. buy 89.. And just buy some octane booster. Don't waste your money on the nos octane booster. I work at big lots and at big lots for 1.59 we have octane booster.. Supposed to raise octane for a 16 gallon tank 3 octane levels.. thats like running 92. Even if it doesn't work it still gives me no problems. My friend has a 1st gen with a small 16g and some other basic mods and he runs 89 all the time.. he has no problems except he likes to awd launch his.. It is a manual something i wish i had. Only problems he has is tire wear.. 89 is only 2.79

The only thing an octane rating that low will effect is detonation. That is bad, very bad. But what you could do instead of keeping the wastegate open all the time is run low boost. Like 2-3 psi, if you have a boost controler and gauge this can be easily acomplished. With the stock spark advance, and boost that low, you should be just fine to run 87 octane. Just don't expect a hell of a lot of power out of it.

a boost controller will only allow you to set your boost to as low as the spring is set for on your wastegate. I"m drunk so i may be mistaken, but regardlesss, 9lbs should be the lowest attainable without some other kind of modification

Yeah I'm a bit tipsy too I just realized that and was coming back here to correct myself. Thank you for pointing out my ineberation...LOL

Don't post information that is incorrect!!! Such as THIS!

Adding octane booster DOES increase octane rating, but only slightly. It requires 10 octane POINTS to raise the gas 1 full octane. So......your 3 octane "levels" only raises the actual octane rating of the gas in your tank by .3, creating an actual octane rating of 89.3, not 92.

www.google.com is your friend. Live it, learn it, love it.

Yes and your still better off going with premium since theres approx 1.20 between 89 & 93 that i calculate between fill up difference. Octane Booster :notgood:

i believe the manufactures no what there talking about when they put a sticker in side your gas door saying premium unleaded only.....

Octane booster ROFL They mean .3 if anything. There was a big article about it, and lots of research. No use. If you cannot afford good gas for your car, Then sell it or do not drive it. Don't try to modify parts so you don't build boost. Just take it easy on the gas pedal. If you think gas prices is alot, I'd hate to see you buy c16 for $9.00+/gal. :tease:

Yes, and the Owner's Manual says specifically to not use fuels containing MTBE. So everyone in California has been going over to Nevada to get gas for the last decade.

I've ran normal 87 octane with no booster, and it has run fine. Only main thing is that the acceleration isnt as much (doesnt seem like it, little lower then normal), but still got good gas mileage, no knock, etc. I just feel more comfortable putting premium in, and it isnt that much of a wallet buster even though 93 octane here is 3.29/gallon... thats more then $40 to fill up.

comon guys if you can afford the 93 octane don't drive. If you want no boost disconnect the wastgate arm. :thumb:

Seriously i would never run 89 octane in my talon.

Over all I'd say gas is gunna be f*cked for a while...Its gunna go way up then only come donw a little bit from where it peaked at I bet. Well never see 2.79 for premium again. There is an energy crisis that has been laying ahead for a whille now and I think this Hurricane is whats putting it into motion. So we got this Hcane and the War in Iraq. Ya ya you better belive gas is gunna go up. Damit!! :toobad:

Gas prices will be higher because down here (Mississippi, and such) Hurricane Katrina knocked out the refiners. They supplied 1/3 of the US with gasoline. So there is a supply problem. It is not that we do not have the crude oil coming in, it is that we cannot process it until power is restored on the coast and damage is repaired.
Expect a month or so before power and the supply problem will lighten, but the prices will remain the same until the coastal refiners are back in full operation. The prices are high to keep folks from driving needlessly and therefore conserve the refined fuel that we have.
Right now, here in Jackson, MS, there is a 3-4 hour wait in line to purchase fuel of which they are selling Premium only and limiting 10 gallons (varies from place to place). Our price is $3.59. At least you guys can get fuel :) . I am driving back home to see my wife (100 miles away) this weekend on fumes. Hope I can make it back to work on Tuesday.

Later guys,
MM

If premium fuel goes up to $5 a gallon, I'll park my car and drive my wife's Hyundai Tucson. It's a V6, but it takes 87 octane and gives better mileage than my DSM. I paid $2.78 for regular and $3.05 for premium yesterday.

The DSM owner's manual does state that IF premium fuel is not available, you can use 87 octane, but there will be a performance loss. :coy:

I have a friend who ran 87 in his daily driver gst, just dont boost past say 12 psi on a stock turbo and you should be fine.

I'm just curious how detrimental a few gallons (About 4) of 89 octane gas going in a 96 TSi AWD would be to the car's health? I let my dad borrow my car and he put some in. I would say there was an equal amount of 93 in the tank before that. I understand that mixing different octanes averages out sort of. So, should I maybe lay off the boost a little until I drain the tank and refill it with 93 octane, or you think it will be okay averaging out to about 91 octane?
