87 octane in a stock 1g AWD?

My '90Talon did not specify to use premium unleaded only when I bought it new. I was using 87 octane for about 5 years, then used 93 octane when I changed my 14b to b16g with the supporting mods and raised the boost to 16 PSI. I finally got it rebuilt at 169,000 when the valve seals started to leak oil. Other than seals, the engine was in great shape.

Dude just run the highest octane for your car and save the headaches that may arise from using cheap gas later on. I always use 93 on mine, just 20 cents more a gallon than the 87 at the station.

I agree on the whole thing if you can't afford or want pay to run premium fuel then don't bother owning a turbo car. My Dad was looking at a Mazda CX-7 which is turbo and he was talking to me about the car and I told him its turbo you need to run premium in it he looked into other cars. Why would you want to own a car and not have it perform to its full potential or cause potential damage over a couple bucks? People need to stop being so cheap! Its like buying knock off Chinese parts, you might be fine for awhile, but eventually being a cheap skate will bite you in the ass.

DSMopar, If you have everything stock (ie 7.8.1 compression, boost, timing, etc.) IF I were you, I will just use the 87 octane if the engine is tuned properly per factory spec. The gasoline prices is not getting any cheaper, it seems like every 3 to 4 days the prices go up. It is your call.

yeah i haven't even gotten my car back and the gas prices have gone from 3.15 to 3.55 in two days. So im sure when i get it back by the end of the week gas will be up at 4.00 plus. But I still wouldn't put 87 in because i just spent 3 grand rebuilding the engine.

i know its cheaper to run 87 but running premium will only benifit you and your cars performance. you may not be having knock right now but you will. i dont even put 87 in my 4 stroke dirtbike. so i would just bite the bullet and pay the extra money for 91:thumb:

This is the last comment I'll put in this thread, as it seems to be becoming more and more full of misdirection. My '97 suzuki sidekick requires a higher octane gas than any turbo car I've owned. By requires, I mean it will ping if I don't feed it some plus every so often. None of my turbo cars on stock boost ping while running 87 octane. If I bump up the boost, you bet your ass I put plus or premium in it.

I know I'm not getting the best performance from it, and that's OK with me during my 30 mile one way commute. I'm not racing anyone, and I'm not pegging the boost gauge. Hell, it barely gets past the 0 mark when going uphill. With a commute like that the extra 20-40 cents a gallon can save you hundreds over the course of time. Assume 3 gallons a day, 260 days, that's $104 a year, not even counting long trips or places I'd go outside of work or on the weekends.

If it does knock, you need to either change your tune, or up your octane. If it doesn't, use whatever you want. If nothing bad is happening, then nothing bad will happen.

Now your talking Appels & Oranges. Have you ever read the owners manual for the bike? Mine runs on a straght diet of 87 and pulls 145+ HP on the dyno CBR1100XX and low and behold the owners manual states [Type unleaded pump, Octane number 86 (or higher)]

I bet you might be shocked if you check.

91? hmm I don't think we have 91 it just goes from 87,89,93

93 octane whatever. point is...go with premium

[Type unleaded pump, Octane number 86 (or higher)]

exactly or higher. if your going to pay money for these machines you should treat them as best as you can for the amount of money your spending. so why not give your engines the best of the best so they can perform to the best of the best.

But you are not. the higher octane gas is slower burning so it's combustion is not compleat until the exhaust valve is open and hence cooking the valves and also loosing you HP & milage.

If you want to run the higher octane spend some $$ and get it dyno tuned to optimize it to run on 93. If not your just wasting your $$.

Here is the main point everyone is trying to make. If you buy a turbo car make sure you can afford premium gas. A turbo awd car was never ment to be a gas saver. If you want to check your pockets and save the most money and get best mpg then buy a civic. It won't break down half as much and will save you on gas and you can run 87 without a problem. You can pick up a 93-95 civic pretty cheap too. This hobby has really put a hurt on all of our wallets I'm sure, but Personally there are somethings I'll never do. Run cheap gas (kroger brand), Run lower than 91, or buy chinese knockoffs. I think if people are getting to the point their willing to potentially damage their motor to save a couple hundred bucks in the course of a year their into the wrong hobby.

could not agree more. if you had the money to buy a turbo awd car then you can afford the premium gas.

13.7ET & 109mph + 40+MPG Yes it can be done and it is being done. 1990RS T ROFL Just ask PNEUMO how. He is the expert.:sneaky:

Yes you can have your cake and eat it to.

Anyone do this? It doesn't specifically say 91 or high grade on the dash like the 2g's, it's running less compression and less boost than a 2g, so why not? Doesn't feel like it's making enough power to warrant 91 .

If you look in your owners manual (provided you were lucky enough to get one when you bought the car used) it says to run at least 91 octane in the turbo 4g63. If I get the chance, I will scan the page and post a pic up here for you.

i spent over 4k on my motor alone and another at least 4k on bolt on stuff and im about to do a built head i will never run anything less then 93 car runs so much better with 91 or 93 i know some places you cant get 93 when i went out of state they only had 91 where i stopped never the less i wasnt happy! dsm are not cheap cars. if you plan on having on expect it to break be high manantince and take 93 octane gas

Here is what my factory manual (Fuel Usage Statement)
Cars equipped with a turbocharge engine:
Your car will operate satisfactory on premium unleaded gasoline having octane rating of 91, (R+M)/2. These designations are comparable to 95 RON (Research Octane Number).
However, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 (91 RON).
If prolonged heavy engine knocking (audible pinging) occurs on your car, consult your dealer.

like i said, go with 91 or 93. if you want to be cheap be prepared to not be cheap in the future, why wouldnt you want anything but the best in your dsm anyways? these cars are like girlfriends - high maintenance but beautiful.

It's simple, IF you want to put trash gas in you're Turbo car... then turn the boost down as low as you can get it!
Even then. You will most likely detonate, during the summer temps. :notgood:

At the minimum, get some form of Logging! to watch for knock! Only to keep it from,... well Melting Rings, Burning Valve seats, melting plugs, just general carnage!
Don't be dumb with you're DSM like all the kiddies. DO IT RIGHT! or don't do it at all! WTF

DougR :talon:

But if your not running WEP (War Emengercy Power) 87 will work just fine. Durning WWII in Air training Command when the new pilots and old War Weary aircraft they ran limited boost. Say the P47 AKA the JUG take off power was 2800 RPMs and 58" of boost =2300HP

When they came back state side they derated the R2800 to about 1500HP or less running aprox 2600RPMs and right around field barrow 30"+-.

Same game with our little 4banger be easy on it and it will run forever on the (CHEEP SHIT)

As I said before I get away with a stock 4g63T running stock boost as a daly commuter aprox 100miles freeway a day for about the last 186k We have not detnoated any pistons beaten any rod bearings to death still with the orginal 14b and had any valves for lunch (other than snapping a Tbelt or two). My fault not he engines.

Drive it like a normal person and not a HOT ROD HARRY the enging will go until the rest of the car rusts into the ground.

My last post on this subject now let the FLACK begin:boring:

I think this has been :beatentodeath:
