I have my 6 bolt torn down. I am trying to deceide to have it done locally or send the block/crank-rods out but to whom would I send it for a quality rebuild. As for most price is a consideration. I serched the vendors that support tuners and became more confused with the different options. I know I want WISECO 9:1 pistons. I should probably get a new front cover and SBR has an off name one with new oil pump gears for $175 instead of Buschur's $300. Also found a complete gasket set for $175, again compared to Buschur's $300. price.
How much can these '91 rods take power wise?
Well guys if you have had experience either going local or sening it out please let me kow what you had done and the cost, same for te head also. I plan on mild cams, HKS264's or a Crower stage 1 set. Mark

hey, go with the Ross pistons, from what i hear they are a bit better. also 1G big rods can handle around 400hp max. my setup is going w/ the ross pistons from turbogarage.com for $400 and the eagle h beam rods from wiredspeedlab.com for only $295. and as long as you have a good local machine shop, then they should be able to do the job correctly, just check into them before you take it in, thats what i did. im using Wolffies racing engines in Baroda Michigan for mine. Also check out jacksonautomachine.com if you wanna send it out, they are the best in 4g63's. also they have a complete gasket kit w/ a cometic head gasket for 179. thats where mine is commin from.
But for the record to try to help get you unconfused here is my setup.....for my bottem end
Ross Racing Pistons w/ Ross Racing Rings. .20 over
Eagle H Beam Rods, 6bolt
Clevite rod and main bearings.
ARP Main, Rod, and Head Studs.
Balanced block w/ Jacksonautomachine (JAM) balance shaft elimination kit
new water pump
Power enterprises kevlar timing belt
JAM new front engine cover w/ new gears.
Im sure theres more but i cant remember right now
if you have any q's just ask me and ill be glad to help out.

I would not say ross are better than wiseco's. And I think his choice of wiseco is a good choice since hes not building much of a 'drag' car. They run a tighter wall clearance so hell have a little less slap. Also, i would not buy anything from buschur. Unless you wanna pay 2x's the price u can get it somewhere else. Locally, ive yet to find someone trust worthy enough to honestly follow the specs you give them to do the motor. Big rods can hold upto 500whp btw. Eagle rods would be a nice addition tho. And skip arp mains, theyre not needed, and youll def need to get the mains line honed if you used em.

And send it to jackson if you wanna pay an absolute fortune and deal with jerks. I can give you some machine shops to send it out to if interested, lemme know.

ok how bout this, ross or wisecos would be a good choice, but theres no way in hell that stock 1G big rods will hold up reliablely 500 whp, they will do 400 hp cranck max, eagles are good to 600whp, if not more, reliably. And do not skip the ARP's, there just a little more than stockers and are alot better, wouldnt you want a little extra peice of mind?

dont give people incorrect info. A stock 6-bolt shortblock with big rods is reliable from 400whp-450whp. Thats with STOCK pistons. eagles have made 700+whp also. And ive yet to see someone find the max HP capability of the stock mains. Using arp mains REQUIRES to have the mains honed, which is just more money. Hes running a 50trim, he isnt making 800hp here. Stock mains are more than good enough.

Well around my way a lowerend gasket kit which does not come with a hg but ever thing else cost about 40$.

Another thing to use stock rods with aftermarket pistons u have to get it machined correct? Like u do to 2g pistons 1g rods? it cost around 200 and if it does cost around that much i wold just pay the extra 100 $ or what ever the difference is to get forged since ur already down there. IMO

Yea i agree get your info right before you start giving out info. 1G rods are good for 500whp, slowboy uses tehm in there stage1 block which is good for 500whp. Also a stock bottom end is good for 400-450 with no problems, but i do no some one who is making about 500whp on a stock bottom end.

As far as your piston choice, I'd say either one would be good. But since you are going to be replacing the pistons you should probably jsut build the whole bottom end while you are there. Thats what i plan on doing.

A friend is making 532awhp on his stock short block 6-bolt. The motor has over 130k on it, and he has been in that power range for about 20k miles.

I think I will go local so I can do it as cash comes along. I thought the '91 rods were quite strong and though i have no HP foal they shoul hold uo th the task. WISECO's from Buschur @$399.w/rings. best pric ihave seen on them. I will be asking for parts and suppliers as I go along with this project. My '93 has 109k miles and uses some oil. A bath for the block is next and crank measurements. Thanks, mark

Wiseco's are as good as Ross except they (wiseco) also come with ARP rod bolts. You don't need ARP main's it IS a waste of money. ARP head studs are a must. If you are really tight on money go with the 1g rods. They can hold good for 500hp and DO NOT require machining to fit on the pistons so long as you get 1g pistons. You will want some good bearings such as Clevite's. Find a local machine shop and check them out. Make sure they look good and have a torque plate for your 4 banger. If you walk in an see nothing but big/small block v8's you may want to try another place.

Just some clarifications and suggestions. Hope it helps.

Since when have pistons come with ARP rod bolts?? Eagle/Scat rods come with ARP rod bolts, not Wiseco or Ross pistons.

Go with the Wiseco pistons, like someone said above, they run tighter clearences. I've heard a few 4g63s with JE and one with Ross pistons that slapped like a mofo in Michigan's cold winters. I would imagine New York winters would be similar if you plan on driving it in the winter as well.

Yep that was bad....definately wasn't thinking on that one. Anyways, thanks for the correction.
