5 sp aftermarket rear end in an AT rear

I bought a 97 GSX for a road track car. It currently is an automatic which I will be swapping to a 5 speed. I am aware of swapping the rear end for gear ratio differences between the AT and MT but my main question is.... are the rear end cases the same? Would I be able to swap in an aftermarket rear end with the MT gear ratios? Mechanically inclined, I see no problem, but I know all cars have their quirks.

You should be able to swap ring and pinion and aftermarket diff between the auto and manual rear housing. You should have an experienced person do the swap so they can set it up with the proper clearances.

So if they swap then I should be good to order a manual ratio rear diff for the auto to manual swap.


So now Im wondering, if the diff does fit, why would anyone get an entire new rear end for the swap?? Why not just get an aftermarket LSD?
