4th gear doesn't work anymore!

Alright, just bought this car about a month ago and I noticed something rather annoying. 4th gear only goes in sometimes. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and reverse all go in nice and smoothly. 4th gear though... I will put it into gear, but once I let off the clutch it pops back into neutral and I hear the gears grinding (from the stick being in 4th gear position and my hand holding it there, I don't hear it in neutral). It will not go into 4th at all. 5th to 4th doesn't work either. Any idea on what it could be? My dad thinks it could be the linkage in the shift assembly (no idea what that is...)

Best place to look is your shifter bushings. If they are all intact than I have bad news. Your tranny needs a rebuild. I recommend checking TRE or John Sheppard for trannies. It might cost a few hundred more but you will never have to worry about your tranny again.
