so lately i have been having a hard time getting my car to go into 4th gear. it has been a slight issue ever since i got my car but lately its been to the point where i just skip it ### its too much work to get it into 4th gear. what happens is it goes down into 4th fine but when i pull the clutch out it just pops out, it doesnt grind or anything it just goes back to neutral. once i actually get it into 4th if i can it will be fine and its never popped out once i actually got it into gear and started driving. any ideas? im thinking maybe worn out cables or bad syncro? help please!

check the cables again and change the Transmission oil , hopefuly its nothing major, as it could be bad syncros and your transmission will need a rebuild.

try to adjust the cables and hopefully that will fix it.

you can adjust the cables and i sent you already the link , did you see it?

look for excessive play in the shifter cables , remove the Air Filter and the pipe and have a look at the cables while your friend is trying to shift.

oh yeah i saw the link but i noticed the how-to was on a 1g and i have a 2g would it still be the same? i dont remember seeing anything on the cables like the pictures on there either...

great info on adjusting the shifter cables. i am gonna do that on my 230k gst tomorrow. all original tranny n motor... still chugging along. but would be nice if the shifting could still be all buttery rather then just smooth. it is not tight and crisp. i will hopefully get it just right like it used to be... fun fun!! =)

ok i have a problem with my 4th gear as well. just started happening.. when i am driving and need to go in 4th it will either go in fine and wont pop out or it will not go in at all. will start grinding so i skip it.. what could i be.. Thinking sychronizer?? but dont know.. any suggestions.. the tranny was rebuilt last year, by the previous owner.. has ACT clutch.. thats the only gear with problems.. sometimes 2nd gear will gring .. but very very slightly..

It can be several things, but more than likely the transmission requires a rebuild including a new 3rd/4th hub and slider assembly (including a new 3rd/4th shift fork and new synchros, keys and springs). If you are having regular popout issues, the gear that is having the problems may have damaged engagement dogs (the teeth on the gear that engage the slider to engage the gear). If the engagement dog teeth (not the gear teeth themselves, but still part of the gear) are worn, it will cause popout issues along with grinding or shifting difficulties. This usually happens in conjunction with the excessive wear of the corresponding hub and slider and synchro(s). It is important to replace the corresponding hub and slider, springs, and keys along with the synchros and shift forks (1st/2nd and 3rd/4th are the most common to break or wear out), and the gear(s) may need replacement if there is excessive wear evident to the engagement dogs, or chipped/broken/missing gear teeth, etc.

Sometimes gear popout or shifting issues can occur from a broken or damaged shift fork, shattered or partially shattered hub and slider, or from excessive bearing endplay on the input or intermediate shafts. As well, Late 1992-1999 3rd/4th gear hub and slider assemblies are especially fragile and are succeptible to shattering the slider, imploding or shattering the hub, breaking the retention springs for the hub and slider keys, shattering the hub and slider keys, and breaking the 3rd/4th shift fork.

Being FWD, the options of upgraded parts are slim, but the Jon Ripple at TRE (WELCOME TO TRE   WE SPECIALIZE IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR) I believe is the only one that uses a heavier duty 3rd/4th gearset assembly in the FWD transmissions (stage 3).

As far as I can remember, there is no adjustment on 2G shifter cables. If I recall, it is only on 1G shift cables. You can check that the shifter counterweight doesn't hit or get caught up on anything in the engine bay by manually shifting the shifter linkage in the engine bay with the vehicle off. If you can go through all the gears with the vehicle off, and it isn't hitting anything in the engine bay, you should then check the shifter linkage bracket bolts and the rubberized bushings that attach the bracket to the transmission bellhousing. If they are loose, or you are missing a shift cable retention clip, this will cause shifting issues. As well, if you have excessive shifter play with the vehicle in-gear, you should also check your shifter base bushings (if they are stock), and upgrade them to a set of Symborski shifter base bushings, and also inspect/replace the shift linkage bushings on the transmission with a set of brass ones or ball bearing ones, as the stock ones have a tendency of seizing or wearing out causing shifting issues.

Sorry for the long winded answer....

Good luck,

Tim Zimmer

yeah my rs was slipping out of 5th .. and everyone told me that the tranny neede a rebuilt.. so you may have to do that

The only fix is a rebuild like twicks stated. But if you're short on funds, you can try changing the transmission fluid as a temporary band-aid.

And no, shifter cables on a 2g can't be adjusted.

Mike....

Ive been noticing that when I see a thread that I want to reply to, you have already answered for me.

I also see that you are in NJ.

I am in Norwalk CT.

Maybe we should meet up and finish each other sentences.
