So my serpentine belt broke at least I think that's the belt that broke it's the outer most belt that's connected to the alternator, power steering and ac compressor but I'm not sure if it runs the water pump so I'm scared to drive it until I know for sure. I drove it home after it broke and the temp gage didnt move but it was a short drive and the car always seems to run cool anyways. Just want to know if I can drive it to the shop or should get it towed. I'll attach a picture it's not the best cause it crammed in there so tough to get a good angle on it but maybe itll help someone answer since the 4g64 isnt very common engine in these cars.

1- why’d I break? hopefully just an old belt but none the less.
2- What’s preventing “you” from dropping on another belt? Very straight forward and quick install

I dont think it was tentioned down enough and on all the pulleys perfectly. I had it in a shop and they noticed it wasnt on all the way and they adjusted it but still must have not been on right cause it ended slipping off and most of it got torn off there was just a strip of the belt left when I pulled over to take a look. It started squealing really bad I thought it just got wet somehow cause of the rain it had done this before and usually went away after a few seconds but it didnt go away and then I lost power steering and realised what happened. Pulled over as soon as I could but it was too late. I wanted to try to do it myself but i couldnt find any diagrams for the serpentine belt for a 2g 4g64 engine so I have no idea how its supposed to go on it also looks like its gonna be hard to get to everything and I've heard aligning it is a pain and it seems 2 mechanics messed it up so I'm figuring I would too. But also I think something else might be wrong too my p/s is leaking a tiny bit and think the pump might be on it's way out also my compressor pulley is rough cause I couldnt find a new one and had to use one off a rough junkyard eclipse and grease it a ton for it to spin right so I wanted a good mechanic to go through it all so I can change everything that needs to while so it wont happen again. Sorry I know I wrote a lot so thank you for responding and if you read all this too.

That belt drives your water pump, so I wouldn't drive it far without it or you could overheat. Not to mention your battery may not hold up long since the alternator isn't spinning.

Okay that's good to know really glad I asked here cause I almost was gonna drive it pretty far to put away for the winter in a garage so thank you. Theres a really good shop down the road from me it's less than a mile away I dont think the car overheat driving it there so think I might try that. That reminds me though the battery light obviously came on right when the belt broke but so did my brake warning light any idea why that would come on from the belt breaking? It's not from the ebrake.

Your charging system is incomplete. That light is to grab your attention. Put the belt on yourself.

I will save you time and money, if you take that car to a shop to have that specific belt installed..... SELL THE CAR.

I know why the battery light is on I was asking why the brake warning light would come on too. I have no idea what I'm doing clearly by my question and I'm not comfortable changing something I've never done without even a good diagram let alone repair write up for me to follow. I'd rather pay some one to do it right the first time than f*** it up myself and have to take it to the shop anyway and spend more having them fix my f*** up. Also want someone experienced to look everything over because as I've said in other post I think more needs to be replaced than just the belt. Regardless who or how it gets done is irelevant to my question so if you're not gonna be helpful then please just dont respond.

Deleted my last post as I was wrong.. the alternator belt assists the water pump/power steering belt so you are at risk of overheating if you drive it too far. If the shop is close, you could probably make it without issue.

On a side note.. it’s not a serpentine belt.

Serpentine belts typically run multiple accessories and are called as such due to the routes they typically wind through to accomplish this.

The 4G64 and 4G63t share the same accessory drive belts with three separate belts running three separate systems. The innermost belt on the crankshaft runs the A/C compressor. The outer belt on the crankshaft runs the water pump and alternator, with a dual pulley on the water pump that piggybacks to run the power steering pump.

I wouldnt drive the car at all personally. You have no water circulation at all. As for the above comments about selling the car. I think the point being made is these are not only old cars but finicky cars. If you cant do a simple repair like this yourself then be prepared for very expensive ownership. I speak from 30 years of owning mitsubishis

So little update I ended up driving it to the shop this morning, it was really cold outside and the temp gage didnt go up at all it was a really short drive. I'm glad I took it to the shop because it turns out the reason the belt came off and got shredded was because a pulley was one backwards. See even if I was able to get the belt on myself I would have never known or reliased that and ended up snapping the belt again and spending more money. I appreciate your concerns for my finances but I just wasnt confident that I'd be able to fix it right. I mean I had to cut the old shredded belt out just to get it off I couldnt even get it off the right way let alone put a new one on. I doubt I even had the right tools to be able to reach down in that tight area to mess with the pulleys and tensioner and I had no reference for how to position the belt. I've had this car since 2013 and it's been really reliable and cheap to own. I do work on the car myself, I'll do stuff like spark plugs, brakes, basic maintenance stuff basically but somethings I'd rather leave to the pros. If I had someone to help me I'd definitley do more but I dont know anyone that works or knows stuff about cars I come from a family of extremely unhandy people so it may seem simple to some of you but to me some of these things are not and I only have the internet to help and I cant always afford to mess these repairs up and have my car be broken for a while so I dont always bother.

You should really have your crankshaft damper checked or changed at this point, I have had mine fail with under 100k on it on my Spyder 2.4, they are getting old and can throw the belt also, it needs to be pulled on with the belts off to see if you can pull the outer ring off of the center ring.
